Can Teladoc Prescribe Antibiotics For Chlamydia

How Is Chlamydia Transmitted

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Itâs also considered a sexually transmitted infection , which means that it can spread between sex partners through any kind of sexual contact. This contact is not limited to vaginal intercourse you can also contract oral chlamydia through oral sex, although it is a less common cause of Chlamydia trachomatis infections. Because sexual contact increases your risk, itâs a good idea to know if you have an STD before you have intercourse with a new partner.

In short, there are many different ways you can contract or spread chlamydia. To protect your sexual health and the health of your sexual partner, get tested for chlamydia before beginning any new relationship.

Vaccines For Children Program Pharmacy Providers

MO HealthNet pharmacy providers not enrolled in the VFC program cannot administer vaccines to MO HealthNet participants covered under the VFC program. A VFC provider must immunize all MO HealthNet children for VFC vaccines. Through the VFC Program, federally provided vaccines are available at no cost to public and private providers for eligible children ages 0 through 18 years of age. Children that meet at least one of the following criteria are eligible for VFC vaccine:

  • MO HealthNet Enrolledâmeans a child enrolled in the MO HealthNet Program
  • Uninsuredâmeans a child has no health insurance coverage
  • Native American/Alaskan Nativeâmeans those children as defined in the Indian Health Services Act
  • Underinsuredâmeans the child has health insurance, but the benefit plan does not include vaccinations.

Providers may bill for the administration of the free vaccine by using the appropriate VFC Administration Codes. Providers must not use any additional administration procedure code. The MO HealthNet reimbursement for the administration is $5.27 per component. Pharmacies can enroll as VFC providers if they meet all VFC Program requirements, including having a medical provider authorized to prescribe all ACIP-recommended vaccines. They must offer all ACIP-recommended vaccines for the ages they serve. See Missouris Vaccines for Children Provider Manual for the requirements and policies of the program.

How Do I Test For Chlamydia

You can get tested for chlamydia even if you dont have any symptoms.

In some countries you can get a self-testing kit to do at home.

If you test positive for chlamydia, its important to tell any recent sexual partner/s so they can also get tested, and treated if necessary. If you need advice about how to do this, speak to your healthcare professional. You should also test for other STIs.

Can You Prescribe Antibiotics

Yes, however, any prescription of antibiotics must be accurate and professional. We understand the negative consequences that may result from over-prescribing, and thus our doctors will only write prescriptions in instances where such medication is absolutely necessary.

Antibiotics arenât always the right treatment. Antibiotics do not fight infections caused by viruses like colds, flu, most sore throats, bronchitis, and many sinus and ear infections. Instead, the doctor may provide a treatment plan that includes symptom relief for viral infections. Learn more on the CDC website

Antibiotics Available Over The Counter

Some topical antibiotics can be purchased as over-the-counter medicines.

However, it is always recommended that you consult a medical expert before purchasing and using any medication.

Topical antibiotics are used to treat skin wounds, scrapes, scratches, and minor burns.

They are available in ointment, cream, spray, or powder forms and are used to prevent infection in topical skin ailments.

Some over-the-counter topical antibiotics include:

  • Benzoyl peroxide

Using topical antibiotics when they are not required can do more damage than good and leave your skin overly irritated.

This is why it is essential to use any antibiotics after consulting with a medical professional, even if they are available over-the-counter.

Can I Treat Yeast Infections At Home

You can find many over-the-counter antifungal products in the health and beauty section of a grocery store. Look for ointments or suppositories with miconazole or clotrimazole. Simple yeast infections can often be treated at home, but if your symptoms return in less than two months, you should make an appointment with your doctor.

Many women use natural remediessuch as tea tree oil cream or coconut oilto treat yeast infections at home, but these treatment methods are not as effective prescription or over-the-counter medication. You should always consult your doctor before trying any alternative treatment methods.

What Are The Treatments For Chlamydia

If you are diagnosed with chlamydia, your doctor will prescribe oral antibiotics. A single dose of azithromycin or taking doxycycline twice daily for 7 to 14 days are the most common treatments and are the same for those with or without HIV.

With treatment, the infection should clear up in about a week. Do not have sex for at least 7 days until you have taken all of your medication, and do not stop taking the antibiotics even if you feel better.

Your doctor will also recommend that your partner be treated as well to prevent reinfection and further spread of the disease.

Women with serious infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, may require a longer course of antibiotics or hospitalization for intravenous antibiotics. Some severe pelvic infections may require surgery in addition to antibiotic therapy.

Make sure you get retested after three months to be certain the infection is gone. Do this even if your partner has been treated and appears to be infection free.

Telemedicine: What Could Go Wrong A Lot

Someday, we may miss the quaint idea of going to see your doctor for your medical concerns.

I realize taking your children to see their doc is a pain. So is taking your car into the mechanic, waiting for the cable guy or going out for groceries. There are other things youd rather be doing with your time. Can a quick phone call substitute for a doctor visit?

At least one huge insurance company thinks so. My familys health insurance comes from Aetna Healthcare Theyre really pushing me to try Teladoc .

One of the many promo brochures they sent shows a sad-looking child in the background, with an app open on moms phone in the front. How would you like to talk to the doctor? it says in big friendly letters. Holly, presumably the childs mom, is quoted, One night, my child was running a high fever. I called Teladoc and the doctor prescribed a medication & plenty of fluids. Glad I avoided the time and expense of the ER.

24/7 doctors! What could go wrong?!

So why is Aetna pushing Teladoc? Its cheap. Aetnas payout to the telemedicine company is far less than what theyd pay for an urgent care or emergency room visit. Insurance companies arent eager to spend money for people to see doctors. Cheap is good for insurance companies, but is it good for your children?

Does Chlamydia Treatment Have Side Effects

An antibiotic called Doxycycline is the most common medicine used to treat chlamydia. Like most medicines, it can cause mild side effects. The most common side effects of Doxycycline are nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, loss of appetite, mild diarrhea, skin rash or itching, change in skin color, vaginal itching, or discharge. These side effects should go away after you finish taking the medicine. Talk to your nurse or doctor about any medicines youre already taking and any medical issues you already have before taking Doxycycline.

How Will The Online Doctor Diagnose My Infection As Bacterial

Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, meaning they are no good for treating viral or fungal infections. The doctor will be able to diagnose your infection as bacterial based on your symptoms, medical history and the length of infection. If they are unable to comfortably diagnose your infection they will write you a lab referral for testing. Once your results are in they will prescribe you an appropriate treatment plan, including antibiotics online if necessary.

Parents Have A Role In Chlamydia Prevention

Parents can do two main things to help their kids avoid getting chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections , says Dombrowski. These two things are:

  • Talk openly. Parents can start by talking with their kids about sex and sexual health early, giving the kids accurate information she says. When having these conversations, dont try to frighten children into practicing abstinence or safe sex. Its pretty common for parents to use STIs to talk about what can happen if you have sex or unprotected sex. But using STIs as a scare tactic is not effective, she says. It just makes the kids feel more frightened, more stigmatized, and terrible if they really do get one.
  • Ensure access to condoms. Parents are often focused on preventing pregnancy, says Dombrowski, which can be achieved with various contraceptives besides condoms. Parents should also think about kids having access to condoms for the prevention of chlamydia and other STIs, she says. Parents can leave condoms lying around where kids will find them, without saying much of anything about the condoms, she suggests.

Do I Need A Telehealth Service Like Teladoc If I Already Have Insurance

Having a doctor on call whenever you need makes a huge difference in your life. Even if you have health insurance you can still benefit from access to virtual doctors. Its a low cost expense with high value, so its certainly worth giving it a try.

Take advantage of this amazing time in telemedicine.

When To Use Telehealth For Stis

The COVID-19 pandemic increased interest in and access to telehealth services. Many people learned that telehealth could be a good option for replacing in-person care.

Where people have the resources to engage in telehealth effectively, it can reduce travel time and other costs associated with going to see a physician. However, telehealth isn’t equally valuable for all conditions.

STI care is one of the situations where telehealth is sometimes a good option, but not always. Since most STIs require some form of laboratory testing to aid in the diagnosis, telehealth alone won’t cut it for figuring out if you have an STI.

However, telehealth can be a great way to follow up on diagnosis and treatment. That’s particularly true if used in combination with scheduled laboratory testing where people can provide a sample at a convenient time and then follow up with their healthcare professional using telehealth.

Telehealth can also be a good option for partner notification and treatment. Indeed, this is one of the few areas where there has been research into telehealth and e-interventions for STI care.

Partner notification and contact tracing can be used to reach out to, and sometimes presumptively treat, sexual partners of those newly diagnosed with an STI.

In general, telehealth for STIs may be a better option for ongoing treatment and prevention than the diagnosis of an STI after a new exposure.

What If I Dont Get Treated For An Std

Failure to properly treat STDs can lead to permanent damage to both the male and female reproductive organs, although some STDs are more dangerous than others. For example, untreated chlamydia can spread to your uterus and fallopian tubes, causing pelvic inflammatory disease . If left untreated, syphilis can damage your nervous system, brain and can even cause death. Gonorrhea can cause severe complications, including miscarriage, infertility, septic arthritis, and even blindness.

Ignoring symptoms, or avoiding routine testing, can be detrimental to your health. Getting routine STD screening is a responsible thing to do.

What Happens If You Dont Get Treated For Chlamydia

Even though chlamydia is common and doesnt usually cause any symptoms, it can become a big deal if its not caught and treated early.

Chlamydia can spread to your uterus and fallopian tubes if it goes untreated for a long time. This can cause you to have pelvic inflammatory disease . PID can cause permanent damage that leads to pain, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy. So getting tested regularly for chlamydia really lowers your chances of getting PID.

Having chlamydia may increase your chances of getting or spreading HIV.

If you have chlamydia during your pregnancy and dont treat it, you can pass it to your baby when youre giving birth. Chlamydia can also cause eye infections and pneumonia in newborns, and it also increases the risk of delivering your baby too early.

Testing and treatment for chlamydia is quick, easy, and the best way to avoid all of these problems.

When It Comes To Antibiotics Can Too Much Of A Good Thing Be Harmful

Antibiotics are powerful drugs that help our bodies ward off diseases caused by bacteria. When used appropriately, they quickly and effectively eliminate infections, causing us to feel better in a matter of days. However, when used to treat other health conditions, antibiotics are not only ineffective but can be harmful to our overall health.

According to a growing body of research, the more we take antibiotics to cure bacterial infections, the more our bodies build resistance, which wipes out their effectiveness in making us well.
