How Quickly Do You Need To Return The Samples

What is chlamydia? | Infectious diseases | NCLEX-RN | Khan Academy

Once youve taken your samples, you should return them straight away in the freepost envelope provided. All of our kits have a 4 month expiry date so please make sure you use and return them as soon as you can.

Please note: STIs do not show up immediately in test results. If you take the sample too soon you might be given the all-clear by mistake. For Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea tests, we recommend waiting to take your samples until 2 weeks has passed since the unprotected sex that youre worried about.

How Does The Test Work

Simply enter your postcode and date of birth to order your test kit.

The test kit includes either a pot for a urine sample or a swab, a form, safe packaging and a freepost envelope.

When your kit arrives, fill out the short form in capital letters. Fill in the label and stick it on the screw top bottle. Follow the instructions provided to take your sample and then post it off with your form in the freepost envelope.

Supply of swabs is currently limited as a result of coronavirus testing so some people who would normally receive a swab kit may receive a urine sample kit instead.

If you’re taking a urine sample, make sure you havent peed within the last one hour if you have, wait until later.

Regular tests help reduce the risk and spread of infection so keep testing!

How Long Before I Get My Results

Results are typically available within a week of testing. Some results are available much sooner. We will schedule a follow-up appointment for you to return and receive your results and treatment if needed in a confidential environment. Are Canker Sores Caused By The Herpes Virus

Canker sores are not caused by the herpes virus or by any other virus. In fact, the cause of canker sores is unknown, although they may be triggered by a minor injury in your mouth from dental work or brushing too hard, an allergy, a vitamin B deficiency, stress, or a food intolerance. Some medical conditions, such as celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease, may also cause canker sores, and they often occur in families, so its possible genetics or environment play a part, too.

Canker sores typically appear as small, round, or oval whitish sores with a red border, according to the Mayo Clinic. They typically occur on the tongue, inside the cheeks, inside the lips, or on the gums. The medical term for a canker sore is aphthous ulcer. Canker sores can be quite painful, but they usually heal within about two weeks without leaving any scarring.

Unlike cold sores, which usually occur outside the mouth, canker sores occur only inside the mouth. Like cold sores, canker sores are recurrent, but they are not contagious: You cant give a canker sore to another person. Canker sores occur more often in teenagers and young adults, and they are more common in women than men.

  • Visiting your local urgent care center. Many urgent care centers offer testing for most STDs. You can search for free, fast and confidential testing locations in your area using the CDCs GetTested tool.

  • Visiting your local pharmacy. Many pharmacies can schedule testing for some STDs, or provide an at-home test that you can return to the pharmacy or mail directly to the lab for analysis.

Anything Else I Should Know

Chlamydia is spread through any form of unsafe sex. So if your test shows that you have chlamydia, its really important that you let your sexual partners know that you have it, as they may have it too. Your current sexual partner and any recent partners should all get tested and treated.

The staff at the clinic can get in touch with your partners confidentially if youre not up to it.

To make sure that you don’t re-infect each other, you must not have any sex or share sex toys with your partner until seven days after you have both completed your treatment.

Re-test after six weeks to confirm that treatment has been successful and that the test result was accurate.

If your original test was positive its also important to get a repeat test after three months. We will contact you to remind you.

The Accuracy Of Rapid Std Tests

Buy Chlamydia and Gonorrhea STI Test for Women & Men Check for ...

Not all rapid tests are created equal. Some have higher sensitivity and specificity than others.

Sensitivity is the ability of a test to correctly identify those with the disease .

Specificity is a tests ability to correctly identify those who do not have the disease .

When testing during acute infection, rapid STD tests offer the average sensitivity and specificity:

  • Gonorrhea: 86% sensitivity and 97% specificity
  • Syphilis: 85% sensitivity and 91% specificity
  • Chlamydia: 86% sensitivity and 97% specificity
  • Hepatitis B: 97% sensitivity and 99% specificity
  • Human papillomavirus : 87% sensitivity and 94% specificity
  • Herpes simplex: 93% sensitivity and 99.9% specificity
  • HIV : 92% sensitivity and 99% specificity

Unfortunately, a lower sensitivity rate translates to an increased risk of a false negative result, meaning that a person is given the all-clear when they are actually infected. For perspective, the 92% sensitivity rate of the currently available at-home HIV test translates to one false negative out of every 15 tests.

This is why certain bacterial diseases are more accurately diagnosed with a culture rather than a rapid test.

Should I Get Tested For Chlamydia And Gonorrhea

Yes! You should get tested for STDs, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, before and after every sexual encounter with new partners. If youve been in a long-term, monogamous sexual relationship the same partner, you should still test for STDs once a year.

If youve recently tested positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea, complete the treatment, then test again after 3 months to ensure the treatment was successful.

Additionally, it is possible to be re-infected with both diseases, so even if youve already been treated for chlamydia or gonorrhea, youre still susceptible to re-acquiring it. Thats why its so important to get retested after every sexual encounter with new partners.
