Guide To Sti Window Periods: When Should I Get Tested

How Do #STIs Affect Pregnancy? Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV and the STIs That Can Affect #Pregnancy

Looking for convenient, discreet, at-home STI Testing? Take our simple quiz to find the right test for you.

The condom broke, or slipped off, or maybe you had oral sex without protection, and now youre scared youve gotten an STI. The prevalence of these sticky situations is what makes discussing sexual health before getting intimate with a new partner so important. But we all know that mistakes happen, timelines can move faster than expected, and unfortunately sometimes situations arent fully within our control.

At this point, your panic might convince you that you must get tested right away. Once youve entertained the possibility of an STI it can be very difficult to get the intrusive thought out of your mind. While this fixation is completely valid, getting tested immediately might be premature. If you get tested the day after sexual contact, the infection may not result in a positive test. In order to lower your risk of a false negative, its important to adhere to specific STI window periods.

Signs And Symptoms Of Chlamydia

Chlamydia is known as one of the silent diseases which can produce no symptoms for a long period of time. Approximately 7095 percent of women and 50 percent of men with chlamydia do not observe chlamydia symptoms at all. The symptoms can also be mild and almost unnoticeable.

Another reason why symptoms are not the best way to determine the infection is that it is often confused with gonorrhea as the symptoms are very much alike. Asymptomatic nature of chlamydia makes it difficult to estimate how long a person remains infectious and this period is commonly believed to last until full recovery.

Chlamydia symptoms show up between 1 and 3 weeks after the contraction.

Can Certain Stds Lie Dormant And Not Be Detected

In some cases, an STD may be asymptomatic because its latent, or lying dormant in your body. Latent STDs can cause someone to remain undiagnosed until symptoms begin to appear. This may put them at risk for long-term complications.

Chlamydia, hepatitis C, HIV, HSV , and syphilis can all have periods of latency.

The best way to ensure that dormant STDs receive the proper diagnosis and treatment is regular STD screening. The CDC recommends that all sexually active adults with new or multiple sexual partners receive at least yearly testing for most STDs, especially chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Its also recommended that people who have sex without a condom or other barrier method receive STD testing more frequently.

How Do You Catch Chlamydia

You can get chlamydia through:

  • Unprotected oral sex and sex without a condom. You dont even have to experience penetration to get it as you can transmit the bacteria by only touching genitals together.
  • Sharing sex toys.
  • Infected mothers who have the infection might transfer it to their newborn baby during birth. For this reason, all expecting mothers should double-check for chlamydia with their OB-GYN.

You cant catch chlamydia through kissing, hugging, sharing baths, towels, swimming pools, toilet seats, or cutlery.

The Window Period For Std Testing

Basic At

Chioma Ndubisi, MD, is a board-certified OB/GYN who specializes in sexual and reproductive health in New York, New York.

The window period can sort of be thought of as an STD test waiting period. After you are exposed to a disease and become infected, you wont test positive right away. Instead, there is generally a length of time before you will test positive for the disease. That period is known as the window period or the STD testing window. Its different from the incubation period, which is the time that passes between being exposed to a disease and starting to experience symptoms.

How long it takes to test positive for a disease such as an STD depends on a number of factors. Things affecting the length of the STD testing window include:

  • What exactly the test is looking for. Some tests look for the pathogen that causes the disease. Other tests look for your immune response to the pathogen. In general, the window period is shorter for the first type of test.
  • The specific test that is being done. For example, a nucleic-acid amplification test that looks directly for the organism would usually be able to detect an infection more quickly than an antibody-based test that needs to wait for an immune response. Nucleic-acid amplification can also find lower quantities of an organism than direct testing. Direct testing options include things like bacterial or viral culture.

Improvement should occur right after receiving treatment. Some of the changes that you might notice include:

    • Pain while urinating will improve within a week.
    • Discharge will return to normal.
    • There wont be bleeding between periods or heavier periods.
    • Pelvic pain will fade away.
    • Pain during sexual intercourse will decrease.

To prevent yourself from catching it again, get re-tested three months after treatment. This is essential if you engage in sexual intercourse with a partner who hasnt been tested for chlamydia.

A test result that shows a possible infection is called ‘reactive’. False reactives are rare but do happen, due to the sensitivity of these testing platforms.

    Who To Test For Chlamydia

Sneaky Chlamydia | Do You Have It & Not Know It?

Anyone with the following genital symptoms should not have sex until they see a healthcare provider:

    • A burning sensation when peeing
    • Unusual sores, or a rash

Because chlamydia usually has no symptoms, screening is necessary to identify most infections. Screening programs can reduce rates of adverse sequelae in women.31,41 CDC recommends yearly chlamydia screening of all sexually active women younger than 25. CDC also recommends screening for older women with risk factors, such as new or multiple partners, or a sex partner who has a sexually transmitted infection.40 Screen and treat those who are pregnant as noted in How does chlamydia affect a pregnant person and their baby? Women who are sexually active should discuss their risk factors with a healthcare provider to determine if more frequent screening is necessary.

Routine screening is not necessary for men. However, consider screening sexually active young men in clinical settings with a high prevalence of chlamydia. This can include adolescent clinics, correctional facilities, and STD clinics. Consider this when resources permit and do not hinder screening efforts in women.40

At the initial HIV care visit, providers should test all sexually active people for chlamydia. Test at least each year during HIV care. A patients healthcare provider might determine more frequent screening is necessary, based on the patients risk factors.42

When taken properly it will stop the infection and could decrease your chances of having complications later on. You should not share medication for chlamydia with anyone.

Hoe Werkt Een Soa Test Als Je Ongesteld Bent

    What Is An Incubation Period

The incubation period is the time needed for the body to develop its response, following an infection. So, when the body gets exposed to a sexually transmitted infection, it starts preparing for an antibody attack to fight it off. As a result, symptoms start appearing. In other words, it is the interval of time between when the person gets exposed to an STD and when symptoms start appearing.

You should not get confused about the incubation and the window period.

    Menstruation And Sti Tests

If youre on your period when you go to a sexual health clinic, you will still be able to get the tests you need in fact, it generally doesnt matter at all where you are in your menstrual cycle. Theyll be happy to see you regardless of whether youre bleeding or not.

This is because STI tests are sensitive enough to pick up infection even if the sample contains up a bit of menstrual blood. If a test needs to be repeated for whatever reason, clinic will let you know.

Its a good idea to be mentally prepared for your visit to the clinic: in most cases youll be having swabs done, so they might ask you to remove your tampon or menstrual cup before you have the test. Make sure you have a spare tampon with you. Because you might need to undress from the waist down, it makes sense to avoid clothing on your lower half thats difficult to get in and out of – such as lace up boots, or tights.

Remember, staff at sexual health clinics are very experienced and wont be put off by seeing a patient who is having their period!

How much does your boyfriend know about periods?

You can prevent STIs without abstaining from sexual activity, such as by getting vaccinations and using condoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . You and your partner may also decide to get tested so that you’re aware of each other’s STI status before sex.

Overall, “f you’re smart and strategic, you can still have a great time,” said Dr. Ross. So keep yourself protected and follow the same protocol as you would on any other day.

What Is The Treatment For Chlamydia

Chlamydia can be easily cured with antibiotics. HIV-positive persons with chlamydia should receive the same treatment as those who are HIV-negative.

Persons with chlamydia should abstain from sexual activity for 7 days after single dose antibiotics or until completion of a 7-day course of antibiotics, to prevent spreading the infection to partners. It is important to take all of the medication prescribed to cure chlamydia. Medication for chlamydia should not be shared with anyone. Although medication will cure the infection, it will not repair any permanent damage done by the disease. If a persons symptoms continue for more than a few days after receiving treatment, he or she should return to a health care provider to be reevaluated.

Repeat infection with chlamydia is common.49 Women whose sex partners have not been appropriately treated are at high risk for re-infection. Having multiple chlamydial infections increases a womans risk of serious reproductive health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy.50,51 Women and men with chlamydia should be retested about three months after treatment of an initial infection, regardless of whether they believe that their sex partners were successfully treated.40

Infants infected with chlamydia may develop ophthalmia neonatorum and/or pneumonia.10 Chlamydial infection in infants can be treated with antibiotics.

    What Is A Discordant Result

    STD Testing

SH:24 uses highly sensitive & specific diagnostic tests for HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea however, when tens of thousands of tests are done each year it is possible for unexpected results to occur.

One reason for this is contamination, which can occur at the time of sampling or in the laboratory. The molecular amplification tests we use are very powerful and the smallest trace of the organism can result in a positive or reactive result. Since you are testing at home contamination is unlikely and our partner laboratory abide by strict quality controls to ensure that cross contamination does not occur consequently, it is highly unlikely for the test result for Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea to be wrong.

When SH:24 refers you to a service for treatment for Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea we do not expect the clinic to repeat the test at this time however, in some rare circumstances when the result does not match the clinical history the clinic you visit may opt to repeat the test and wait for that result.
