How Is Chlamydia Transmitted

Chlamydia, like other STIs, is passed from an infected person to a partner through certain sexual activities. Chlamydia is passed primarily during anal or vaginal sex. Chlamydia can be passed even if the penis or tongue does not go all the way into the vagina or anus. If the vagina, cervix, anus, penis or mouth come in contact with infected secretions or fluids, then transmission is possible.It is less likely to be transmitted through oral sex.

Chlamydia can be passed when the mucous membranethe soft skin covering all the openings of the bodycomes into contact with the mucous membrane secretions or semen of an infected person. This is what happens during unprotected sex whether vaginal or anal sex.

Oral sex is not a common cause of infection with this bacteria. Chlamydia is less likely to be transmitted during oral sex because the bacteria that cause chlamydia prefer to target the genital area rather than the throat. This is why it is unlikely for chlamydia to be transmitted from mouth-to-penis and penis-to-mouth contact, although it is still possible. It is even less likely for transmission to take place from vagina-to-mouth or anus-to-mouth contact. Transmission is not known to occur from mouth-to-vagina and mouth to anus contact.

Even a woman who has not had anal sex can get chlamydia in the anus or rectum if bacteria are spread from the vaginal area, such as when wiping with toilet paper.

What About Sharing Straws Eating Utensils And Other Items

You should be fine. Theres no evidence that you can contract gonorrhea from sharing these objects with someone who has received a diagnosis.

That said, objects of the naughtier variety could do it. You can contract gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted infections from sharing sex toys with someone who has received a diagnosis.

Avoiding kissing is probably the only way to completely remove any risk for oral transmission, with limiting your number of kissing partners coming in at a close second.

In 2019, Australian researchers surveyed 3,677 men who have sex with men.

The data collected looked at the number of partners the men had in the last 3 months in three categories, including:

• kissing-only partners
• sex-only partners
• kissing-with-sex partners

Kissing-only and kissing-with-sex were associated with throat gonorrhea. Having four or more kissing-only or kissing-with-sex partners doubled the risk for throat gonorrhea.

Sex-only defined as any type of sexual activity without kissing wasnt associated with throat gonorrhea.

Can You Catch Other Diseases From Kissing

While kissing wont give you chlamydia, you could catch other diseases from kissing infected people. These include:

• The common cold.
• The Epstein-Barr virus, which causes mononucleosis.
• Strep throat.
• Herpes simplex virus, which causes cold sores.
• Hepatitis B.
• Meningitis.
• Tooth decay.

Some of these conditions are transmitted through saliva while others will only be transmitted if you kiss someone with open cuts in or around their mouth.

What Is The Treatment For Chlamydia

Chlamydia can be easily cured with antibiotics. HIV-positive persons with chlamydia should receive the same treatment as those who are HIV-negative.

Persons with chlamydia should abstain from sexual activity for 7 days after single dose antibiotics or until completion of a 7-day course of antibiotics, to prevent spreading the infection to partners. It is important to take all of the medication prescribed to cure chlamydia. Medication for chlamydia should not be shared with anyone. Although medication will cure the infection, it will not repair any permanent damage done by the disease. If a persons symptoms continue for more than a few days after receiving treatment, he or she should return to a health care provider to be reevaluated.

Repeat infection with chlamydia is common.49 Women whose sex partners have not been appropriately treated are at high risk for re-infection. Having multiple chlamydial infections increases a womans risk of serious reproductive health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy.50,51 Women and men with chlamydia should be retested about three months after treatment of an initial infection, regardless of whether they believe that their sex partners were successfully treated.40

Infants infected with chlamydia may develop ophthalmia neonatorum and/or pneumonia.10 Chlamydial infection in infants can be treated with antibiotics.
