Urogenital Infection In Men
In men, chlamydial infection of the lower genital tract causes urethritis and, on occasion, epididymitis. Urethritis is secondary to C. trachomatis infection in approximately 15 to 55 percent of men, although the prevalence is lower among older men.2 Symptoms, if present, include a mild to moderate, clear to white urethral discharge. This is best observed in the morning, before the patient voids. To observe the discharge, the penis may need to be milked by applying pressure from the base of the penis to the glans.

What Drugs Interact With Doxycycline And Azithromycin
Doxycycline
- It is recommended that doxycycline not be taken at the same time as aluminum, magnesium, or calcium based antacids, such as Mylanta, Maalox, Tums, or Rolaids because, like food, these medications bind doxycycline in the intestine and prevent its absorption. Similarly, doxycycline should not be taken with minerals or with bismuth subsalicylate .
- Doxycycline may enhance the activity of warfarin and cause excessive “thinning” of the blood leading to exaggerated bleeding, necessitating a reduction in the dose of warfarin. Phenytoin , carbamazepine , and barbiturates may enhance the metabolism of doxycycline thus making it less effective.
- Doxycycline may interfere with the action of penicillins and should not be combined with penicillins. It may also reduce the effect of oral contraceptives. Combining tetracycline and methoxyflurane may reduce kidney function.

To establish efficacy, US researchers randomly assigned adolescents with urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis infection to azithromycin or doxycycline . The participants were residents at youth correctional facilities, which made the chances of reinfection low, say the researchers.
