Treatment For Trichomoniasis And Chlamydia

How Is Trich Diagnosed

What is trichomoniasis? | Infectious diseases | NCLEX-RN | Khan Academy

It isnt possible to diagnose trichomoniasis based on symptoms alone . A healthcare provider must perform a test to diagnose trich.

The parasite is harder to detect in men than in women. General tips for women to help their provider find out what they may have include:

  • Schedule the exam when youre not having your monthly period.
  • If you have sex less than 24 hours before the exam, use condoms.

Healthcare providers often diagnose trich in women by putting a sample of vaginal fluid or discharge on a slide and viewing the parasite under a microscope. This test is not always reliable.

Recently, tests that are much more accurate have become available, including DNA tests that are reliable in men and women. These tests can be done with vaginal swabs or urine.

Women may have a trich test done along with a pelvic exam. One of these tests even allows healthcare providers to check for trichomoniasis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea using the same sample.

Which Stds Are Causing The Most Concern

Gonorrhea is far and away the most pressing concern. Currently, thereâs only one CDC-recommended treatment for it: a combination of two powerful antibiotics, azithromycin and ceftriaxone.

Syphilis and chlamydia have also begun to show resistance to antibiotics in some parts of the world, though Klausner says there are several treatment options for both.

STDs, which donât always have symptoms, can cause serious complications if left untreated:

  • Gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease , which causes inflammation of the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, and the uterus, which can ultimately lead to infertility. In men, it can cause infection of the testes and sterility. In rare cases, gonorrhea can spread to your blood or joints, which can be life-threatening. Untreated gonorrhea may increase your risk of HIV.
  • Chlamydia can also cause PID in women, which may result in permanent damage. Though men seldom have long-term complications from untreated chlamydia, it can lead to sterility in rare cases.
  • Syphilis, in its early stages, can cause chancre sores, rashes, fever, swollen lymph glands, and other symptoms. If left untreated for years, it can eventually damage the brain, heart, liver, and other organs, causing paralysis, numbness, blindness, dementia, and death.

Pregnant women with untreated STDs have a higher chance of stillbirth and newborn death, according to the World Health Organization. STDs can also affect babies during delivery.

What Does Discharge Look Like

Vaginal discharge is the result of the cervix cleaning and maintaining itself to stay healthy. During this process, the cervix sheds vaginal cells, cervical mucus, and vaginal fluids which results in a white, opaque substance. Women who havenât yet reached menopause typically experience discharge because itâs a natural part of the bodyâs functions.

What color is discharge and what is it supposed to look like?

The answer to that will vary from person-to-person, but most women have a white vaginal discharge. As soon as a womenâs menstrual cycle ends, her discharge will be minimal. By the time of ovulation during her cycle, many will notice a stringy discharge and it may even begin to thicken.

However, itâs important to note that women on oral contraceptives may have a reduced amount of discharge, making it harder to identify what ânormalâ is for you. However, if you are experiencing a yellow, brown discharge or even an orange discharge color, it may mean you have a sexually transmitted infection. Gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis infections can all cause changes in a womanâs discharge.

How Is Trichomoniasis Treated

Getting tested for trichomoniasis can be done with either a urine sample or vaginal swab. After getting a diagnosis, it is important that sexual partners also be treated, in order to prevent reinfection .

Trichomoniasis can be quickly treated using a medication with both antibiotic and antiprotozoal functions . When taking these medications, it is important to abstain from alcohol ingestion for 24-72 hours, as this can cause negative interactions . It is possible to transmit trichomoniasis even while being treated. Stay away from sexual contact for at least 7-10 days until after completion of the full course of medicationâeven if symptoms have already gone away .

A follow-up appointment should be scheduled three months after treatment . Antimicrobial resistance is possible with trichomoniasis infections, so if symptoms persist after treatment, be sure to follow-up sooner with your healthcare provider .

Main Differences Between Chlamydia And Trichomonas

Can a Treated STD Come Back?
  • Sexual intercourse, particularly promiscuity, raises the risk of chlamydia-related STDs. In crowded locations, older persons or children are more susceptible to get Chlamydia pneumonia. Having a large number of relationships raises the likelihood of contracting Trichomonas vaginalis.
  • The symptoms of Chlamydia vary depending on the organism. trachomatis produces vaginal discharge, discomfort, and burning. If pneumonia is generating an attack, respiratory indications such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and fever arise.
  • The best way to identify Chlamydial sickness is to do a nucleic corrosive proliferation test that looks for bacterial genetic content. Trichomonas contamination is diagnosed utilizing a microscope to check for the organism and a nucleic code amplification check.
  • Chlamydia is triggered by a bacterium that must survive inside the presenterâs cells. Trichomonas is formed by a virus that resides outside of the presenterâs cells.
  • Chlamydia outbreaks are caused by a bacterial cell called Chlamydia trachomatis or Chlamydia nephropathy. Trichomonas epithelial tissue is a protozoan cell that induces trichomonas illness.

Most Importantly Remember How Long Trichomoniasis Can Live In A Body:

Heres one last bit of hope. For partners hoping for a more realistic source of infection, keep in mind the length of time that trichomoniasis can live in a body. Due to the stealthy nature of the infection, a person may unknowingly carry trich for months without realizing it.

In this sense, this can be a bright light for concerned couples. After all, it is possible that your partner may have been infected during a previous sexual encounter, but was never aware of the infection. Now that the symptoms are present, it seems like a brand new case of trich. Of course, it is also possible that you were infected by a past encounter and never realized it. No matter what, the most important piece of the puzzle is that you and your partner test regularly.

What Are The Complications Of Trichomoniasis

Untreated trich increases your risk of becoming infected with the human immunodeficiency virus if youre exposed to the virus. Untreated HIV can lead to AIDS. Women who have trich and HIV are more likely to pass both diseases on to their partners. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that HIV-positive women get tested for trich at least once a year.

Ask all partners whether theyâve been tested recently for STIs before starting sexual contact. If a partner has sex with multiple people, ask about their STI status and encourage them to also get tested. Limiting the number of sexual partners you are exposed to will also decrease your risk of contracting trichomoniasis and other STIs.
