Do Natural Cures Work

Sexually transmitted diseases are generally caused by either a bacterial infection or a virus. Antibiotics are used to treat infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis.

Unfortunately, if your STD is caused by a virus such as Herpes and HIV you will only be able to control the symptoms but never eliminate them altogether. Natural cures, therefore, dont cure sexually transmitted diseases, they only soothe the infection.

New Approach Is Both Prevention And Treatment

Our treatment is the first combination therapy, a two-pronged approach, says the lead researcher, Emmanuel Ho, PhD, an associate professor in the school of pharmacy at the University of Waterloo.

The treatment makes use of nanoparticles to deliver treatment to infected cells. The dual approach prevents the majority of chlamydia bacteria from entering cells in the genital tract and then destroys any bacteria that is able to penetrate a cell wall.

In the laboratory, the gene therapy has successfully killed skin cells infected with chlamydia while at the same time protecting healthy cells. Currently, the only ways to prevent transmission of chlamydia are abstinence and the use of latex condoms. There is no vaccine available.

The first part of the therapy is preventive: It delivers a gene that reduces expression of the chlamydia protein on cells. This means that we will be able to prevent or reduce the chlamydia actually binding to cells that it affects, says Dr. Ho.

The second part is treatment that kicks in if the chlamydia is still able to infect the cells after the gene introduction. Were able to elicit a cellular response where cells form a bubble around the chlamydia and then kill it, says Ho.

Nonantibiotic Treatment For Chlamydia Shows Promise

How is Chlamydia treated? – Dr. Sudheendra Udbalker

In an effort to get ahead of growing antibiotic resistance, researchers test gene therapy for the common STD.

Chlamydia, an extremely common sexually transmitted infection affecting an estimated 131 million people worldwide, is currently easily treated by antibiotics in most cases.

But according to the World Health Organization, growing antibiotic resistance is making the treatment of a number of bacterial sexually transmitted diseases more challenging.

The problem is most pronounced for gonorrhea, strains of which do not respond to any available antibiotics. But antibiotic resistance also exists for chlamydia and syphilis, making prevention and prompt treatment of these diseases critical.

But what if there were a therapy for STDs that didnt involve antibiotics?

Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario are working on developing just that.

As described in the February 4 issue of the journal Scientific Reports, the research team has developed a gene therapy for preventing and treating chlamydia. The hope is that once this therapy is perfected, it can be adapted for use in treating other sexually transmitted bacterial infections such as gonorrhea and syphilis.

    How Is Chlamydia Transmitted

As Chlamydia is a communicable disease, rather an infection, there are severe chances of it to be spread to other people in physical contact. But, there are certain clauses that need to keep in consideration. Chlamydia is definitely contagious which is why one should always practice safe sex or even ensure to be assured of their partners health report before going further with any kind of unprotected physical intimacy.

The bacteria causing the infection is often times, rather, for the most part, is transmitted from the infected to the uninfected person through unprotected sex or even via kissing. Any kind of body fluid exchange has the capability of transmitting the infection to the uninfected person.

Chlamydia is passed when the mucous membrane which is the skin covering the specified openings of the body comes in direct contact with the secretions or body fluids of the infected person. While oral sex is not predominantly a reason behind this infection, there still remains a possible chance of contracting this via that medium too.

Rare cases, but sometimes, the infection is even transmitted via eye infections. Even pregnant women have the possibility of transmitting the infection to their newborn babies.

    Drug Resistance And Biopharmaceuticals

Natural biological materials and phytochemicals offer a wide range of compounds, such as flavonoids, coumarins, tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids, lipids, and peptides, many of which have been shown in vitro to exhibit antimicrobial as well as specific antichlamydial activity, and may prove to be sources of novel antichlamydial substances . However, even as researchers move forward with the identification and isolation of novel single compounds from natural materials, acquired drug resistance may still develop. To progress, it is likely that even with new natural compounds it will be necessary to employ an MDT approach. It is also important to consider that traditional formulations are natural examples of MDT, and the modern concept of MDT may help to explain how some traditional herbal formulations may be successful in treating various bacterial infections. Drug synergies may occur through the use of several compounds which exhibit inhibitory effects through various mechanisms of actions , and this may also lead to a reduction in the rate of acquired drug resistance. However, it seems that the microbial battle which has been playing out in nature throughout the evolutionary process will continue, and it is unclear whether it will ever be possible to identify a permanent single compound solution to the treatment of specific bacterial infections.

    Treatment Of Uncomplicated Chlamydia Infections

Once a chlamydia infection has been confirmed through a positive test result, a doctor will generally prescribe an antibiotic. These may include azithromycin as a single dose therapy or doxycycline for an extended period . Both the infected person and their sexual partner should take this medication to prevent reinfection.

It is essential to take these antibiotics as directed, and where applicable, finish the course. Stopping antibiotics prematurely can cause them to be ineffective, lowering cure rates.

While the above are generally the preferred first-line treatment options, alternatives may be considered by your prescribing doctor in certain circumstances. These may include:

What You Need to Know About Chlamydia

Treating chlamydia is easy, but for those who do not get treated or get treated too late, living with the damage caused by the infection can be hard.

Rabin has treated many women who never knew they had had chlamydia until they couldnt get pregnant due to blocked fallopian tubes. These women often wind up trying in vitro fertilization , which does not always succeed.

There are all kinds of costs involved for these women, say Rabin. There are emotional costs and physical costs. There are also financial costs with IVF. Its much better to not let the tubes get damaged, she says, and get pregnant the old-fashioned way.

What Are The Treatments For Chlamydia

If you are diagnosed with chlamydia, your doctor will prescribe oral antibiotics. A single dose of azithromycin or taking doxycycline twice daily for 7 to 14 days are the most common treatments and are the same for those with or without HIV.

With treatment, the infection should clear up in about a week. Do not have sex for at least 7 days until you have taken all of your medication, and do not stop taking the antibiotics even if you feel better.

Your doctor will also recommend that your partner be treated as well to prevent reinfection and further spread of the disease.

Women with serious infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, may require a longer course of antibiotics or hospitalization for intravenous antibiotics. Some severe pelvic infections may require surgery in addition to antibiotic therapy.

Make sure you get retested after three months to be certain the infection is gone. Do this even if your partner has been treated and appears to be infection free.

What Natural Therapies And Home Remedies For Chlamydia Does Dr Weil Recommend

The best treatment is preventive: Practice safe sex strategies. To reduce risk of chlamydia infection:

    • Use condoms correctly every time you have sex.
    • Limit your number of sex partners, and do not go back and forth between partners.
    • Practice sexual abstinence, or limit sexual contact to one uninfected partner.
    • If you think you are infected, avoid sexual contact and see a doctor.

Any genital symptoms such as discharge or burning during urination or an unusual sore or rash should be a signal to stop having sex and to consult a doctor immediately. If you are told you have chlamydia or any other sexually transmitted disease and receive treatment, you should notify all of your recent sex partners so that they can see a doctor and be treated. Because chlamydia often occurs without symptoms, people who are infected may unknowingly pass it onto their sex partners. Many doctors recommend that all persons who have more than one sex partner should be regularly tested for chlamydia, even in the absence of symptoms.
