How To Get Tested

Chlamydia testing is usually ordered by a doctor. In people without symptoms, a doctor can evaluate their risk and suggest an appropriate screening schedule. If a patient has symptoms of this infection, a doctor will order testing to diagnose or rule out chlamydia.

Testing for chlamydia can be conducted at a hospital, doctors office, health clinic, or community health program.

Chlamydia Std Test Results

STD testing for chlamydia is ideally performed using a nucleic acid amplification test on a urine sample. NAA testing for chlamydia is the most sensitive and effective form of STD testing for chlamydia. Chlamydia is currently the most commonly reported STD in the U.S.

Question 2 Are Samples Other Than Urogenital Samples Such As Throat And Rectal Swabs Acceptable For C Trachomatis And N Gonorrhoeae Naats

Rectal and throat swabs are acceptable for C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae NAAT testing. C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae have been isolated from extra-genital sites in men who have sex with men and sexually active, heterosexuals who engage in unprotected oral or anal sex. The CDC currently recommends oral and anal testing of MSM who have had receptive oral or anal sex, respectively, within the previous year.4 Both C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae testing are recommended on the anal specimens.

Most persons with C trachomatis detected at oropharyngeal sites do not have oropharyngeal symptoms. Although the clinical significance of oropharyngeal C trachomatis infection is unclear and routine oropharyngeal screening for CT is not recommended, available evidence suggests oropharyngeal C trachomatis can be sexually transmitted to genital sites therefore, per the 2015 guidelines on sexually transmitted diseases, oropharyngeal C trachomatis should be treated with appropriate antimicrobials.4

Quest Diagnostics offers throat- and anal -based testing:

    Urine Testing Vs Bacterial Culture

Urine testing is currently primarily used to detect bacterial STIs. Chlamydia and gonorrhea urine tests are widely available. Trichomoniasis urine tests are also available, but they are less common.

The gold standard for diagnosing bacterial STIs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, used to be a bacterial culture. That involved attempting to grow bacteria out of samples that were taken directly from the cervix or urethra.

These days, bacterial DNA testing is considered a better option. It works differently than a bacterial culture. Instead of trying to grow bacteria, these tests just look for bacterial DNA. This can be done using a process called ligase chain reaction or with other DNA amplification techniques.

These types of testing are sensitive to even very small amounts of bacterial DNA. Even better, they do not require a live bacterial sample. As such, they can be run on urine samplesnot just urethral or cervical swabs.

For most people, the thought of getting a gonorrhea urine test or chlamydia urine test is a lot less intimidating than the thought of needing a physical exam.

Question 5 What Do I Do If Test

    7 Warning Signs of Gonorrhea

If an NAAT is positive for C trachomatis or N gonorrhoeae 3 or more weeks after the end of treatment,6 first ensure that the patient has complied with the prescribed therapy and that the patient denies having sex after treatment with an untreated or new sex partner. If these conditions are met, treatment is considered to be a failure. In such cases, the CDC recommends contacting the local or state health department to get guidance and to arrange for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.7

    How Can Chlamydia Be Prevented

The most reliable ways to avoid infection with chlamydia or any sexually transmitted disease are to abstain from oral, vaginal, and anal sex or to be in a long-term, mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner. People who are sexually active should correctly and consistently use condoms to reduce the risk of infection with chlamydia and other STDs.

    When To Get Tested

  • For women, yearly screening is recommended if you are sexually active and younger than age 25, or 25 or older and at increased risk for chlamydia infection when you are pregnant or considering pregnancy.
  • For men, yearly screening is recommended if you are a man who has sex with men.
  • When you have symptoms of chlamydia, such as pain during urination, vaginal discharge and abdominal pain or unusual discharge from the penis, pain on urination or painful, swollen testicles
  • When your newborn has conjunctivitis

When Should I Get A Gonorrhea Test

Because many people who are infected with gonorrhea do not have any noticeable symptoms, a number of health organizations recommend regular gonorrhea screening for certain adolescents and adults between the ages of 15 and 65, including

    • Women under 25: All sexually active women younger than age 25 should get yearly screening for gonorrhea.
    • Women 25 and older: Women 25 and older who have risk factors for gonorrhea infection should be screened yearly.
    • Pregnant women: Because gonorrhea can be passed from mother to child during childbirth, all pregnant women under 25 should be tested. Pregnant women 25 and older should be screened if at an increased risk of gonorrhea infection.
    • Men who have sex with men: Men who have sex with men should be screened annually for gonorrhea, or every 3 to 6 months if they are at an increased risk for contracting gonorrhea.
    • People with HIV: People diagnosed with HIV should be screened for gonorrhea at least once per year.

Regular screening for gonorrhea in heterosexual men without symptoms is not generally recommended.

Risk factors that impact the frequency of gonorrhea screening include:

    • A new sexual partner in the past 60 days
    • Multiple sex partners
    • Having an STD in the past or a sex partner recently treated for an STD
    • Inconsistent condom use

The cost of chlamydia testing varies based on many factors. Chlamydia testing may be paid for by health insurance when ordered by a doctor. Because health plans vary, its important for patients to discuss the cost of testing, including any copays or deductibles, with their health plan.

For patients without health insurance coverage, the cost of testing may include the cost of the office visit and sample collection as well as technician fees. Testing may also be available for free or at low cost through community-based organizations and local health departments.

    How Std Testing Works

When your order from Health Testing Centers there is no need to visit a std clinic, neighborhood health center or public health clinic. The people you see won’t know for what you are getting tested for. The labs that we utilize are the same that your doctor would send you to test for various other issues such as allergies or cholesterol. These facilities are private, comfortable and test for diseases other than STDs. You simply walk in, provide a sample , and walk out.

Blood tests can be used to test for the following sexually transmitted diseases:

    • HIV

Urine tests are typically used to detect the following sexually transmitted diseases:

    • Gonorrhea
    • Chlamydia
    • Trichomoniasis

Whether testing is done via blood or urine samples, the lab that processes those samples is looking for key indicators of an STD infection. For bacterial infections, such as gonorrhea, syphilis or Chlamydia, those indicators would be bacteria in urine samples. In blood tests, such as HIV testing or an HPV test, technicians look for antibodies that the body produces to fight bacteria associated with infection. In cases of viral STDs, such as HIV/AIDS, HTLV, HPV , hepatitis or genital herpes, labs look for antibodies the immune system makes to attack the invading viruses. Trichomoniasis is an infection caused by parasites, which will be found in the urine of infected individuals.

Clinical Significance:C. trachomatis infections are the leading cause of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. C. trachomatis is known to cause cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease , epididymitis and proctitis. It is also the most frequent cause of non-gonococcal urethritis in men. Among women, the consequences of Chlamydial infections are severe if left untreated. Approximately half of Chlamydial infections are asymptomatic. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the causative agent of gonorrhea. In men, this disease generally results in anterior urethritis accompanied by purulent exudate. In women, the disease is most often found in the cervix, but the vagina and uterus may also be infected.
