How Did I Catch Chlamydia

Frank answers – Can you get an STI like chlamydia from a toilet seat?

Guest over a year ago

Ok so heres the deal…I just found out I tested positive for chlamydia…Now heres the thing…I have been with my boyfriend for the past 4 months now , before him I had no sexual contact with anyone since 6-25-12. On 6-29-12 I had went to my OBGYN and was tested for everything and it all came back negitive. So from 6-25-12 till 12-9-12 I have had no sexual contact what so ever with anyone! So how did I catch it? Now my boyfriends background…before we got together he was in prison for 2 and a half years and was tested during that time. When he got out he contacted me within 3 days, a week after that we were together. I had just found out that he was with someone before me . He told me there was 1 girl and it was 1 time. So that would be my answer right? He got it from her and gave it to me. But what if he gets tested and she gets tested and they both come up negitive?? Which brings me to my question…How did I catch chlamydia if my boyfriend does’nt have it and both of us are being faithful and he did’nt get it from her??

How Do You Know You Have Chlamydia What Are Chlamydia Symptoms

Most people who have it dont know because they dont have symptoms. Among young women, chlamydia is sometimes called the Silent Epidemic because it causes so much damage in so many people without even showing any symptoms. A few people might have a thick yellow or clear discharge from the penis or vagina, pain or burning when they pee, or pain or bleeding during sex.

Can You Get Chlamydia More Than Once

Its possible to have chlamydia multiple times. The bacteria will not create antibodies to protect your body from further infection. You can get re-infected by continuing sexual relations with a partner who is untested and untreated.

Its best to always use condoms with partners who may have chlamydia.

Can Chlamydia Be Cured

Yes, chlamydia can be cured with the right treatment. It is important that you take all of the medication your doctor prescribes to cure your infection. When taken properly it will stop the infection and could decrease your chances of having complications later on. You should not share medication for chlamydia with anyone.

Repeat infection with chlamydia is common. You should be tested again about three months after you are treated, even if your sex partner was treated.

Chlamydia Is A Serious Infection

How Can You Catch Chlamydia

Chlamydia is Americas most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection. Every year, an estimated 2.86 million infections occur. Since its so common, you may assume that its no big deal. However, chlamydia can be a very serious infection.

Chlamydia is very common, but that doesnt mean it cant have a serious impact on your health. The infection can cause a number of long-term complications. In up to 15 percent of women with untreated chlamydia, the infection spreads to the uterus and uterine tubes, leading to symptomatic pelvic inflammatory disease. In addition, some women experience subclinical inflammation of the upper genital tract. This can cause permanent damage to the affected tissues.

How Does Chlamydia Affect Pregnancy

For pregnant women, chlamydia may lead to premature birth, or babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Premature birth is the most common cause of infant death and can lead to long-term health and development problems in children.

Babies born to mothers who have chlamydia can get:

  • Infections in their eyes, called conjunctivitis or pinkeye. Signs include discharge from the eyes and swollen eyelids. The signs most often show up within two weeks after birth.
  • Pneumonia. Signs include congestion, cough, and rapid or labored breathing, although these are not always present. Signs most often show up one to three months after birth.

What Complications Can Result From Chlamydial Infection

The initial damage that chlamydia causes often goes unnoticed. However, chlamydial infections can lead to serious health problems with both short- and long-term consequences.

In women, untreated chlamydia can spread into the uterus or fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease . Symptomatic PID occurs in about 10 to 15 percent of women with untreated chlamydia.30,31 However, chlamydia can also cause subclinical inflammation of the upper genital tract . Both acute and subclinical PID can cause permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, uterus, and surrounding tissues. The damage can lead to chronic pelvic pain, tubal factor infertility, and potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy.32,33

Some patients with chlamydial PID develop perihepatitis, or Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome, an inflammation of the liver capsule and surrounding peritoneum, which is associated with right upper quadrant pain.

In pregnant women, untreated chlamydia has been associated with pre-term delivery,34 as well as ophthalmia neonatorum and pneumonia in the newborn.

Reactive arthritis can occur in men and women following symptomatic or asymptomatic chlamydial infection, sometimes as part of a triad of symptoms formerly referred to as Reiters Syndrome.35

First Stage Syphilis Symptoms

The first stage of syphilis usually occurs over 4 to 12 weeks. Some people may not notice they have syphilis because they have no symptoms.

First stage syphilis is highly contagious, and symptoms usually begin as a sore on the genital area , anus or mouth.

The sore:

  • may be difficult to notice as it is on hidden areas of the body or painless
  • can appear in areas where there has been sexual contact such as the mouth, rectum, vagina or cervix
  • is likely to occur as a single sore but occasionally occurs as multiple sores
  • is usually painless
  • usually appears 3 to 4 weeks after infection
  • usually heals completely within 4 weeks without any treatment.

If you are not treated for syphilis at this stage, you may go on to develop the second stage of the infection.

Real Question: Can You Get an STD from Kissing?

Its not uncommon for the chlamydia bacteria to lie dormant for years and produce a low-grade infection. During that time, you may not have any symptoms for months, or they can be absent forever.

Around 75% of women and 50% of men with chlamydia report having no symptoms. For that reason, its best not to assume that if you or your partner has chlamydia that it means one of you was unfaithful. You could be in a loving, mutually monogamous relationship and be unaware that you have chlamydia.

How Soon Can You Be Tested

Every STD has its own incubation period. For some STDs, the body begins to produce antibodies and symptoms in as little as a few days. For others, it can take weeks or months for symptoms to appear. Here are the ranges of for some of the most common STDs.

STD
NAAT blood test 2 weeks

While retesting is recommended for bacterial STDs, some STDs are lifelong viral infections. In the case of a lifelong viral infection, a blood test will always detect the STD, even after treatment has been successful. Therefore, retesting would only be necessary if you wanted to reconfirm an original diagnosis.

How Do You Prevent Chlamydia

Using a new male or female condom or dental dam every time you have sex is the best way to protect against chlamydia.

Chlamydia can be passed on by sharing sex toys. Always cover sex toys with a new condom and wash them after use to reduce your risk of getting chlamydia and other STIs.

Its important to regularly test for chlamydia, even if you dont have any symptoms, especially if youve had multiple sexual partners.

The contraceptive pill and other types of contraception wont prevent you getting chlamydia, and neither will PrEP.

Can You Get Std From Toilet Seat

Viral causes of STIs cannot survive for long outside the human body either, so they generally die quickly on surfaces like toilet seats.

Can Someone Get Chlamydia Without Having Sex

How Can You Catch Chlamydia

Because chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease, you cannot get an infection without participating in a sexual act. The only exception is if your mother passes the infection to you during birth.

Though you cannot catch chlamydia without sexual activity, you dont have to have penetrative sex to get an infection. Chlamydia can pass from person to person from sharing unclean sex toys with an infected person or allowing your genitals to come into contact with their sexual fluids.

How Is Chlamydia Diagnosed

Your doctor will ask you questions about your past health and your sexual history, such as how many partners you have. You may also have a physical exam to look for signs of infection.

Several types of tests can be used to diagnose chlamydia. Most use a sample of urine or a swab from the cervix, vagina, or urethra.

Since chlamydia can cause serious problems but may not cause symptoms, its a good idea to get tested once a year if you are sexually active and in your mid-20s or younger. Local health departments and family planning clinics usually offer low-cost testing.

Chlamydia Can Be Prevented

The most effective way to avoid getting a sexually transmitted infection is to not have sex. However, if you wish to have sexual contact, you can reduce your risk of infection with these actions:

  • Minimizing the number of partners with whom you have intimate contact
  • Asking your partners to get screened for STDs before engaging in sexual activity
  • Always using latex condoms when having intercourse of any kind

How Do People Get Chlamydia

Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus of an infected partner. Ejaculation does not have to occur for chlamydia to be transmitted or acquired. Chlamydia can also be spread perinatally from an untreated mother to her baby during childbirth, resulting in ophthalmia neonatorum or pneumonia in some exposed infants. In published prospective studies, chlamydial conjunctivitis has been identified in 18-44% and chlamydial pneumonia in 3-16% of infants born to women with untreated chlamydial cervical infection at the time of delivery.9-12 While rectal or genital chlamydial infection has been shown to persist one year or longer in infants infected at birth,13 the possibility of sexual abuse should be considered in prepubertal children beyond the neonatal period with vaginal, urethral, or rectal chlamydial infection.

People who have had chlamydia and have been treated may get infected again if they have sexual contact with a person infected with chlamydia.14
