If they dont get medication to treat it they can pass it back to you or onto other people, which isnt good for anyone, right? Sometimes Chlamydia can cause serious health problems, including infertility. So its really important people get the chance to be treated if you think they might have it.

Start The Conversation As Soon As Possible

Again, the best time to have a conversation about STIs is before you become intimate. This is especially true if either or both of you have had multiple partners in the past since STIs are most often spread through contact with bodily fluids, such as blood, semen, or vaginal fluids.

Other things you may want to discuss include:

  • Both of your sexual histories, including what kind of protection youve used in the past when sexually active
  • Individual risk factors, such as whether either of you has had sex without a condom or used drugs with needles

If you receive a positive test result for an STI, such as chlamydia or syphilis, and youre fairly certain you got it from your partner, then its important to talk with them about it as soon as possible. Dont wait or put it off the longer you wait, the harder it may be to tell them about it later.

Prepare For The Conversation

To prepare yourself for the conversation with your partner to let them know they may have an STI, do some research on the subject. There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about STIs out there, so its important to read up on the topic and be ready to answer your partners questions.

But that doesnt mean you have to become an expert on the topic there may be questions you both have, and in those cases, you can do your research together.

Opinions Of Contact Methods

In discussing their views of different methods of partner notification for chlamydia, interviewees made a clear distinction between traditional, personal methods of contact such as face-to-face and phone and the newer, less personal methods of email and SMS. Generally, people believed that a sensitive, personal issue such as having a sexually transmissible infection needed to be discussed personally with the partner. However, SMS and email were seen to be appropriate, useful or even advantageous depending on the circumstances.

What If I Dont Get It Treated

What is #Chlamydia? The Signs and Symptoms of this Common #STD and How to Get #Tested

If chlamydia is left untreated it can become a serious threat to your health.

Chlamydia can spread from your cervix to your uterus and fallopian tubes. It can cause pelvic inflammatory disease , which can damage and block your tubes. You may not be able to get pregnant if both tubes are blocked because sperm are unable to reach the egg. If you have had PID you are more at risk of having an ectopic pregnancy or long-term pelvic pain.

Chlamydia can spread from your penis to your testicles and cause painful swelling. You can become infertile.

What Measures Can I Take To Prevent These Conditions

The only way that you can completely prevent yourself from catching chlamydia, gonorrhea, or another STI is by abstaining from sexual activity.

But there are also plenty of ways you can reduce your risk of contracting or transmitting these infections:

  • Use protection. Both male and female condoms are effective in helping to reduce your risk from infection by either bacteria. Using proper protection during oral or anal sex can also reduce your risk of infection.
  • Limit your sexual partners. The more sex partners you have, the more you risk exposing yourself to an infection. And because these STIs may not cause noticeable symptoms, sex partners may not know they have the condition.
  • Get regularly tested. Whether youre having sex with multiple people or not, regular STI tests can help you remain aware of your sexual health and ensure that youre not unknowingly transmitting an infection to others. Regular testing can also help you identify an infection even if youre not experiencing any symptoms.
  • Dont use products that affect your vaginal bacteria. Healthy bacteria in the vagina helps fight off infections. Using products like douches or scented odor-reduction products can upset the balance of vaginal flora and make you more susceptible to infection.

What Your Chlamydia And Gonorrhea Test Results Mean

Having a negative chlamydia test result means that you do not have an active chlamydia infection, at the time of the test. However, this does not imply that you will remain negative if you had high risk sex. Having a positive chlamydia test result means that you have an active infection that has to be treated by your doctor. The treatment normally consists of an antibiotic, such as the Zithromax, that should clear the infection in one to two weeks. If the chlamydia infection is severe, women might need hospitalization and an intravenous antibiotic.

Having a negative gonorrhea test results means that you do not have an active gonorrhea infection at the time of taking the test. This test is not significant for people will get engaged in risky behaviors such as having unprotected sex with multiple partners, among others. In that case, even if your test is negative, you have to repeat it after a possible infection. Having a positive gonorrhea test indicates an active gonorrhea infection. You will have to check with your doctor to address problem and, get treated with a course of antibiotics.

When And How To Test Again

Yes, you can get online treatment for chlamydia

Gersh recommends that people get tested once a year, or after every new partner whichever comes first!

Its also good practice to get site-specific STI tests before engaging in sex acts that incorporate a new part of the body.

For example, if you and your partner have never had anal sex and now want to, its a good move to get anal STI tested first.

To get tested, find an STI clinic that tests for all the STIs youre interested in getting tested for.

If you dont know which STIs you want to get tested for and are looking for a doctor to breakdown what STIs youre most at risk for given what sex acts are part of your sex life, its best to go to a clinic that *doesnt* specify one or two or three STIs in their online marketing.

Some clinics, for example, only test for HIV or only test for gonorrhea and chlamydia.

When Should You Get Tested For Hiv After Condomless Sex

Keep in mind, if you believe youve been exposed to HIV, its important to see a healthcare professional as soon as possible.

Theres no HIV test that can accurately detect HIV in the body immediately after exposure. Theres a time frame known as the window period before you can be tested for HIV and receive accurate results.

Regardless of the type of test you take after a potential HIV exposure, you should get tested again after the window period has passed to be certain.

People at higher risk of contracting HIV should get regularly tested as often as every 3 months.

How To Talk About STD Testing & Screening | Planned Parenthood Video

I got herpes when I was in college before I had intercourse with anyone. I had an outbreak of red blisters that were more itchy than painful, so I went to urgent care. The nurse explained to me that its still possible to get herpes from oral sex.

Its actually been years since Ive had an outbreak. But I still always disclose to my partners that I have herpes. Ive been doing this for almost seven years and use a similar script for everyone. I remember rehearsing it over and over before I made my first disclosure. I even tape-recorded my voice to listen to myself because I wanted to come across as calm and confident, which was advice I read somewhere.

Before Im in a situation that could lead to sex, I ask the guy about when he was last tested and if hes had any STDs or has ever had any. Ive actually only had one guy ever tell me that he once had gonorrhea, knowing how prevalent STDs are, a lot of people probably werent being honest. Then I tell the guy that I have herpes and that its been several years since I had an outbreak, and I say that Im open to talk about it. I also insist on wearing condoms, even though Im on birth control. I think people would be surprised to know that its only been a deal breaker twice.Erin, 27

    Being Exposed To Another Std

Being successfully treated for chlamydia, gonorrhea, or another STD does not protect you from other STDs In fact, many people become infected with STDs over and over again because they continue to have unprotected sex with partners who have untreated STDs.

If youve been treated for an STD and dont want to get another one, the best thing that you can do is change your behaviors to decrease your risk. That means consistently practicing safe sex and always talking to new partners about STD risk before having sex.

Risk factors for getting chlamydia include:

    • Having unprotected sex .
    • Having more than one sex partner.
    • Having a high-risk partner or partners. This includes people who have more than one sex partner or sex partners who have chlamydia.
    • Starting sexual activity before age 18.

Any child with chlamydia needs to be seen by a doctor to determine the cause and to assess for possible sexual abuse. For more information, see the topic Child Abuse and Neglect.
