How Does Chlamydia Infect The Mouth

My Girlfriend Gave Me Chlamydia….. @hodgetwins

This bacteria can infect both male and female genitalia, the anus, the throat and mouth, and even oneâs eyes . Contact with an infected genitalia or rectum, such as through oral sex, can lead to an oral version of the condition. It is also possible for an individual with oral chlamydia to spread the bacteria by giving oral sex to an uninfected person. Even contact with a small amount of the infectious organism would be enough to contract the disease. Direct contact between a personâs mouth and a sexual organ isnât the only way to spread this condition to throat, however. Genital secretions, such as sperm or vaginal fluids, can be transferred from the genitals to an oral cavity via oneâs hand or stimulation aids such as âtoys.â

Can Chlamydia Cause Infertility In Males

In males, Chlamydia may reach the epididymis and testicles making them swollen and painful. The condition is known as epididymoorcyitis or epididymitis. This inflammation of testes is treated using antibiotics. If left untreated, it may affect a males fertility.

According to a new study, Chlamydia causes fragmentation of DNA in sperms resulting in infertility in males. Researchers report that males who have Chlamydia have greater than thrice the normal levels of fragmented DNA in their sperms. However, it was also indicated by the results of this study that appropriate treatment with antibiotics can help in restoring the genetic integrity of the sperms of these males and their fertility. Till this study was conducted, it was believed that Chlamydia caused infertility in females only.

However, in the study conducted in the year 2007 in Spain, sperms of 143 males infected with Chlamydia were studied. It was found that 35% of sperms obtained from the infected males contained fragmented DNA in comparison to only 11% of sperms obtained from healthy males. Moreover, higher percentage of immobile and malformed sperms was obtained from infected males. It was also found that 86% of couples achieved pregnancy after completing antibiotic therapy.

Prevention: According to physicians males can protect from developing infertility due to Chlamydia by getting regular screenings for the disease.

Chlamydia Infection May Have Long

For women, the long-term effects of an untreated chlamydia infection may include:

  • Severe infection with pain and fever requiring a hospital stay
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease, an infection of the upper reproductive tract
  • Scarring in the reproductive tract that causes infertility
  • Higher risk of ectopic pregnancy

Men are less likely than women to have major health problems linked to chlamydia, although they can develop epididymitis, an inflammation of a structure within the testicles called the epididymis that can result in infertility.

A chlamydia infection can sometimes result in reactive arthritis in both men and women.

Facts You Should Know About Chlamydia In The Mouth

Chlamydia in the mouth is a common twist on the most prominent sexually transmitted disease, or STD, in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , there were almost 1.5 million reported cases of chlamydia in America in 2012. This works out to about 456.7 people out of every 100,000 having contracted the disease. Sixty-nine percent of all chlamydia cases occur in individuals between the ages of 15 and 24. This does not take into account the amount of individuals who do not seek treatment for the condition due to an absence of symptoms or limited access to and/or the inability to afford medical treatment. What a lot of people do not realize is that many sexually transmitted diseases also have an oral strain that affects the throat and mouth areas. All sexually active individuals should take it upon themselves to learn about common STDs like chlamydia and how to prevent the contraction and spread of such a condition.

Shady Symptoms Of A Sexually Transmitted Disease

The below symptoms do not always mean that someone has a Sexually Transmitted Disease, but sometimes they can be a sign of an STD that has moved to the next stage. Many of the symptoms experienced point towards a viral infection or the ones that are associated with Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.

These types of Sexually Transmitted Diseases might not show any symptoms initially, but when they do, it is better to get yourself checked immediately. No matter how insignificant the symptoms might look like it is always a better idea to get yourself tested for any possible serious issues as it is much easier to cure and manage the disease if it is caught earlier.

Abdomen Lower Back Or Joint Pain

Pain in your abdomen may be a sign of a chlamydial or gonorrheal infection that has progressed. Late-stage chlamydia and gonorrhea can infect the pelvis and cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease . If left untreated, PID can lead to long-term pelvic pain, infertility, tubo-ovarian abscess, and/or ectopic pregnancy.

Pain in your lower back may be a sign of chlamydia, gonorrhea, or herpes prodrome. Herpes prodrome is a physical pain that typically means a herpes breakout is about to occur. The pain can be located in your lower back, thighs, butt knees, or feet. Herpes prodrome also indicates a time when youre most susceptible to spreading the virus. But even though you may not be exhibiting herpes lesions, youre still at risk of spreading the virus.

Joint Pain can mean that Hepatitis B, syphilis, or HIV have infiltrated your body and have gone untreated or may be, a symptom of gonorrhea or chlamydia. When gonorrhea or chlamydia begin to cause joint pain, its called Gonococcal Arthritis or Venereal Arthritis. How To Detect Tubal Damage Due To Chlamydia

After discussing can Chlamydia cause infertility in females, lets discuss how can tubal damage due to Chlamydia be detected.

Tubal Obstruction at the end is detected by doing a hysterosalpingogram during which a dye is injected into the uterus and its spilling through the ends of the fallopian tubes indicates that the fallopian tubes are not blocked. Pelvic adhesions can be detected by doing a laparoscopy in which a telescope with a small camera at its one end is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen under anesthesia. Since it is an invasive procedure, it is done only when absolutely necessary.

Treatment

Treatment of fallopian tube blockage caused due to Chlamydia may be done in two ways. The physician may perform a procedure that is minimally invasive to clear the blockage of the fallopian tube. Then the pregnancy will either be allowed to happen naturally or with the aid of an oral medicine. The couple can also take the help of IVF, which overcomes the problem of fallopian tube blockage. The choice of treatment in a particular situation is dependent on the condition of the female and her preferences.

Chlamydia Is Caused By Sexually Transmitted Bacteria

The bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis causes chlamydia infection, which usually occurs in the genital tract, so the cervix in women and the penis in men. In both women and men, the bacteria may also infect the rectum and the throat.

“Infections are spread during any kind of sexual activity: vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse,” says Jonathan Schaffir, MD, an ob-gyn at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.

Chlamydia trachomatis can also cause conjunctivitis if the bacteria come into contact with the eyelids or the clear membrane covering the white of the eye.

Because chlamydia infections often cause no symptoms, individuals who have one may not seek medical attention or get treated for it. However, anyone who is infected with chlamydia can pass it to other people, who can, in turn, pass it to others.

Inflammation Of The Testicles

In men, chlamydia can spread to the testicles and epididymis , causing them to become painful and swollen. This is known as epididymitis or epididymo-orchitis. This is very rare.

The inflammation is usually treated with antibiotics. If it’s not treated, there’s a possibility it could affect your fertility.

Can Transmission Be Prevented

The transmission of chlamydia can sometimes be prevented, but there isnât a method that offers 100 percent protection from infection as long as you have sexual contact with an infected individual or come into contact with bodily secretions containing the infectious organism. The use of a condom will prove extremely helpful in limiting your chances of contracting this and many other STDs, therefore it is always a good idea to use a condom, especially with new sexual partners or in an âopen relationshipâ where your partner may be having intercourse with other individuals. You can also decrease your chances of contracting a disease by limiting your sexual contact to as few individuals as possible. Women should be tested for STDs, particularly chlamydia, once each year and it is a good idea for men to follow this recommendation as well. Regular testing will not only make your partner feel reassured but it also enables you to learn about the presence of an infection early on. As you might expect, the sooner you have a diagnosis confirmed, the sooner treatment can begin which will reduce your chances of developing long term effects or complications.
