How Do You Know If Chlamydia Is Gone After Treatment

At Last! Reliable Treatments For Chlamydia

Your chlamydia symptoms should improve within a week of completing your course of antibiotics.

You do not need an immediate follow-up test to check if your chlamydia treatment has worked, as dead chlamydia bacteria may be detected 3 to 5 weeks after treatment, which would give a false positive result. But, if you have a rectal infection, you should have a test after treatment is completed.

If you are under 25 and have tested positive for chlamydia, it is recommended you take a repeat test 3 months after completing your treatment, to check you have not caught chlamydia again.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Chlamydia

  • Vaginal redness or itching
  • Thick, yellow-green discharge coming from your penis, rectum, or vagina
  • Feeling like you need to urinate more often than usual
  • Pain or burning when you urinate
  • Pain when you have sex
  • Pain in your lower abdomen, penis, or vagina.
  • Sore throat or swollen lymph nodes in your neck
  • Fever

What Happens If Chlamydia Is Left Untreated

  • reduced fertility
  • reactive arthritis
  • an infection of the testicles and epididymis
  • pelvic inflammatory disease which can cause pain, infertility and increase the risk of having ectopic pregnancies
  • reactive arthritis
  • pregnancy complications like miscarriages, premature births and stillbirths

When Can I Have Sex Again

If you had doxycycline, you shouldn’t have sex including vaginal, oral or anal sex, even with a condom until both you and your partner have completed treatment.

If you had azithromycin, you should wait 7 days after treatment before having sex .

This will help ensure you don’t pass on the infection or catch it again straight away.

Whats The Right Dosage

Chlamydia Signs in Throat & Mouth

The right dosage of doxycycline depends on the condition you are taking it for. In order to successfully treat chlamydia, doxycycline must be taken for 7 days, twice a day, at 100 mg per capsule. The capsules must be swallowed with water, in the morning and in the evening, and can be taken with or without food. You should sit up for 30 minutes after each capsule.

Youll know if you need chlamydia treatment if youve had:

  • a positive home test for chlamydia
  • a GP diagnose you
  • unprotected sex with a partner who has a confirmed infection

If you think you might have the symptoms of chlamydia, but youre not sure you have the infection, you wont be able to get treatment. In this case we strongly recommend getting tested. The same is true if youre not sure if your sexual partner might have an STI. In these cases, you could order a chlamydia test from our website, or get tested at your GP practice, sexual health clinic, or GUM clinic.

In the past azithromycin, branded under the name of zithromax, was used to treat chlamydia. But, its no longer a recommended treatment. The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV picks doxycycline as the only recommended treatment for chlamydia.

Your doctor might prescribe you a different type of antibiotic, like amoxicillin or erythromycin if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are allergic to doxycycline or azithromycin
  • get side effects as a result of using the recommended treatment

Parents Have A Role In Chlamydia Prevention

Parents can do two main things to help their kids avoid getting chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections , says Dombrowski. These two things are:

  • Talk openly. Parents can start by talking with their kids about sex and sexual health early, giving the kids accurate information she says. When having these conversations, dont try to frighten children into practicing abstinence or safe sex. Its pretty common for parents to use STIs to talk about what can happen if you have sex or unprotected sex. But using STIs as a scare tactic is not effective, she says. It just makes the kids feel more frightened, more stigmatized, and terrible if they really do get one.
  • Ensure access to condoms. Parents are often focused on preventing pregnancy, says Dombrowski, which can be achieved with various contraceptives besides condoms. Parents should also think about kids having access to condoms for the prevention of chlamydia and other STIs, she says. Parents can leave condoms lying around where kids will find them, without saying much of anything about the condoms, she suggests.
  • Summary Of The Evidence

There is no evidence relating to patient values and preferences but the Guideline Development Group agreed that there is probably no variability in the values people place on the outcomes. Research related to other conditions indicates that adherence may be improved with simpler medication regimens. The GDG therefore agreed that azithromycin may be more acceptable to patients since it is a single dose regimen . There is little to no evidence for equity issues and feasibility. Resistance in other infections that often co-occur with chlamydia may restrict the use of some medicines, such as ofloxacin. For many of these medicines, costs may differ between countries in places with high incidence of chlamydia, the cost differences between azithromycin and doxycycline may be large due to greater numbers of people requiring treatment.

In summary, there was moderate quality evidence for trivial differences in benefits and harms between azithromycin and doxycycline, and although the cost of azithromycin is higher, the single dose may make it more convenient to use than doxycycline. While the differences are also trivial with the other medicines, the evidence is low quality and these are therefore provided as alternatives, with the exception of delayed-release doxycycline, which is currently expensive.

If you suspect you have chlamydia, your doctor may want to test cervical or penile discharge or urine using one of several available methods.

In most cases of chlamydia, the cure rate is 95%. However, because many women don’t know they have the disease until it has caused serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, sexually active women under age 25 and others at higher risk should be tested for chlamydia once a year during their annual pelvic exam even if they dont have symptoms.

Pregnant women should also be tested as part of their routine lab work.

Having sex we dont recommend that you have sex, even with a condom, until you finish your treatment. If your partner also has chlamydia, you shouldnt have sex until you have both finished the treatment. Otherwise, you risk catching/passing on the infection again.

All sexual contact including with a condom should be avoided during treatment.

What Happens If You Dont Get Treated For Chlamydia

Even though chlamydia is common and doesnt usually cause any symptoms, it can become a big deal if its not caught and treated early.

Chlamydia can spread to your uterus and fallopian tubes if it goes untreated for a long time. This can cause you to have pelvic inflammatory disease . PID can cause permanent damage that leads to pain, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy. So getting tested regularly for chlamydia really lowers your chances of getting PID.

If you have a penis, a chlamydia infection can spread to your epididymis if its left untreated, and can cause chronic joint pain. Rarely, it can make you infertile.

Having chlamydia may increase your chances of getting or spreading HIV.

If you have chlamydia during your pregnancy and dont treat it, you can pass it to your baby when youre giving birth. Chlamydia can also cause eye infections and pneumonia in newborns, and it also increases the risk of delivering your baby too early.

Testing and treatment for chlamydia is quick, easy, and the best way to avoid all of these problems.

Azithromycin To Be Available Over The Counter For Chlamydia Treatment

Get Over: Can I Get Chlamydia Treatment Over The Counter

Azithromycin is to be made available over the counter to treat asymptomatic chlamydia infection, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency announced today . It is the first oral antibiotic to be switched from prescription-only to pharmacy medicine status.

The drug will be available as Clamelle for people over 16 years of age who have tested positive for chlamydia but have no symptoms, and for their sexual partners.

Making this medicine available from a pharmacy is a real example of how we are progressing, and enabling people to play an active role in taking charge of their own healthcare.

Howard Duff, the Royal Pharmaceutical Societys director for England, said that the decision would mean convenient and effective care for patients. Pharmacists already play an important role in the provision of sexual health services, and have done so for many years. Reclassifying azithromycin will expand on existing services and improve access to chlamydia screening and treatment for patients.

The FPA also welcomed the decision. Natika Halil, director of information at the FPA, said: For people who are already testing themselves at home it is a really positive step forward that the treatment can now also be bought from pharmacies. This will ensure fast and effective access to treatment. This service has the potential to play an important part in reducing rates of chlamydia.

    How To Prevent Chlamydia

Below are some ways to prevent chlamydia

    • Use condoms every time you have sex
    • Discuss testing for sexually transmitted infections with your doctor or nurse
    • Ask if you are due for your annual chlamydia screening
    • See your doctor or nurse if you have any symptoms of chlamydia or another infection
    • Do not have sex if you or your sexual partner has abnormal discharge, burning with urination, or a genital rash or sore

    The Health Risks Of Chlamydia

For up to 40 percent of infected women, untreated chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease . PID effects include abdominal pain, fever, internal abscesses and long-lasting pelvic pain effects also include scarring of the fallopian tubes, which can cause infertility and increase the chance of potentially life-threatening ectopic or tubal pregnancies.

Men can develop scarring of the urethra, making urination difficult and occasionally causing infertility. Although rare, both sexes are at risk of a type of arthritis known as Reiter’s Syndrome that causes inflammation and swelling of the joints.

If a pregnant woman has chlamydia, her baby may be born prematurely, have eye infections or develop pneumonia.

What Are The Side Effects Of Chlamydia Treatment

While doxycycline is an effective treatment for chlamydia, some people may have side effects when taking this chlamydia treatment.

Some common doxycycline side effects may include:

    • headaches
    • increased sensitivity to light
    • nausea or being sick
    • palpitations
    • stomach ulcers
    • joint or muscle pain

If you have any side effects when taking doxycycline, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

The full list of doxycycline side effects and cautions can be found in the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine package.

When taking doxycycline, you should avoid drinking alcohol as it reduces doxycyclines effectiveness. You should also avoid sunlight as increased sensitivity to light has been reported as a side effect of doxycycline.

You should stop taking doxycycline and seek immediate medical attention if you develop any of the following rare but severe side effects, or symptoms of an allergic reaction:

    • Ringing in your ear
    • Fever, swollen lymph nodes or skin rash
    • Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest pain, swollen face, lips, mouth, hand or feet

    What You Need To Know:

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria. Chlamydia is spread during oral, vaginal, or anal sex. The infection most often affects the urethra, rectum, or throat. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from your bladder to the outside of your body. Anyone with multiple sex partners is at higher risk for chlamydia. Your risk is also increased if you have another STI, such as gonorrhea.

    How Is It Treated

Chlamydia is treated with antibiotics. It is important that you take all the pills you are given. You may be given pills for seven to 10 days or you may be given pills for just one day.

    • if you could be pregnant please tell the nurse or doctor so you are given the correct antibiotics
    • tell the nurse or doctor if you are allergic to any antibiotics
    • it is best to have another test 3 months after treatment to check you have not got chlamydia again.

    How Does Chlamydia Treatment Work

Chlamydia treatment works by stopping the bacteria that causes chlamydia from producing an important protein which it needs to multiply. This stops the bacteria from growing and replicating, so your symptoms should improve as your body is cleared of chlamydia.

The first line treatment for chlamydia in the UK is doxycycline. The usual dose is one tablet to be taken twice daily for 7 days. You can swallow doxycycline tablets whole with water and take them with or without food. You should sit up for about 30 minutes after each dose to prevent symptoms of throat irritation or stomach upset.

    Get Retested Following Treatment

Many people have more than one chlamydia infection. If youre a girl or woman and your sex partners are not treated for the infection, you will be at high risk for reinfection. Repeated infections with chlamydia make it much more likely that your ability to have children will be affected. Repeated infections also raise your risk of painful complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease.

Both women and men with chlamydia should be retested about three months after they are first diagnosed and treated. Go to be retested even if you think your sex partners were successfully treated.

What If I Take Too Much

Taking an extra dose of azithromycin by accident is unlikely to harm you or your child. It may, however, increase the chance of temporary side effects, such as feeling or being sick or diarrhoea.

Talk to your pharmacist or doctor if you’re worried, or if you or your child accidentally take more than 1 extra dose.

Can You Get Chlamydia More Than Once

Yes, you can get the infection even if youve successfully treated it already.

A sexual partner who has chlamydia can transmit it to you again, even if youve already had it and treated it.

You can also get chlamydia again if it wasnt fully treated the first time. This can happen if you stop taking the necessary treatment. Its important to complete the antibiotics youve been given, even if your symptoms get better.

The CDC recommends getting tested 3 months after treatment of your initial infection to ensure the infection is cleared.
