Does Chlamydia Cause Cervical Cancer

Doxycycline Side Effects | Uses | Doxycycline Precautions & Best Practices

No, chlamydia doesnât cause cervical cancer.

Itâs possible to get a sexually transmitted infection by having sex with someone who has an STI, even if they have no symptoms.

The following measures will help protect you from most STIs including chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HIV.

If you have an STI, theyâll also help prevent you from passing it on to someone:

  • Use condoms every time you have vaginal or anal sex.
  • If you have oral sex , use a condom to cover the penis, or a dam to cover the vulva or anus.
  • Avoid sharing sex toys. If you do share them, wash them or cover them with a new condom before anyone else uses them.

Doxycycline Resistance And M Genitalium

Information on antimicrobial susceptibility of M. genitalium is scarce because of the limited number of strains isolated from clinical samples. Studies reporting MICs of doxycycline usually found low MIC values, i.e. 5 strains with MICs ranging from0.008 to 0.031 mg/L and 14 strains with MICs ranging from 0.06 to 0.12 mg/L . However, an in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing study conducted using both broth dilution and quantitative PCR showed an MIC range of 0.0631 mg/L indicating that the strains displayed reduced susceptibility to doxycycline but that these isolates remained rare. Finally, a recent larger study showed that 2 isolates out of 103 displayed MIC> 8 mg/L while for other isolates, MICs ranged from< 0.125 to 2 mg/L. However, doxycycline MICs did not correlate with treatment outcomes in this study. As far as molecular detection of mutations mediating resistance is concerned, macrolides and fluoroquinolones were mainly studied and to our knowledge, tetracycline resistance-associated mutations have not so far been identified in M. genitalium. Altogether, MICs mostly indicated susceptibility of M. genitalium to doxycycline and the rare isolates with reduced susceptibility cannot explain the poor efficacy of doxycycline in the treatment of M. genitalium infections., Considering the emergence of MDR M. genitalium strains, it thus appears important to elucidate reasons other than poor patient compliancefor the poor efficacy of doxycycline.

Is Doxycycline Effective In Treating Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. It is highly contagious, and can be transmitted through oral, anal, or vaginal sex.

If you contract gonorrhea, you may be prescribed an antibiotic called doxycycline to treat it along with other medications.

In this article well explore what gonorrhea is, how doxycycline can be an effective treatment, common symptoms of gonorrhea, and how to know when to see a doctor.

When To See A Doctor

If you have symptoms that are associated with gonorrhea, have multiple sexual partners, or have been told by a partner that you have been exposed to gonorrhea, see your doctor.

Your doctor can order lab tests to determine whether or not you have gonorrhea or another STD, and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Gonorrhea requires a medical diagnosis and must be treated in a timely manner.

Because it is a bacterial infection, it requires antibiotics. Since it is a common infection, there are some strains of gonorrhea that are becoming drug-resistant.

If your doctor prescribes antibiotics for gonorrhea, do not stop taking them until you have taken the entire courseeven if you feel betterunless instructed to by your doctor.

Stopping antibiotics before you have taken the whole course can lead to a regrowth of the infection, or can lead to the development of a drug-resistant infection.

The Research On Sti Chemoprophylaxis

Doxycycline Hyclate Capsules 100mg #50

Two studies with men who have sex with men have evaluated the efficacy of doxycycline to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

The first study, by R. K. Bolan and colleagues, found that HIV-positive men who have sex with men who took 100 mg of doxycycline daily reduced the risk of contracting syphilis, chlamydia or gonorrhea during the study by 70%.

A total of 30 men were randomized to either take the antibiotic for 36 weeks or not. At each study visit participants received rectal and urine gonorrhea and chlamydia tests, a pharyngeal gonorrhea test, and a syphilis blood test.

During the study, there were 15 cases of any STI among men not taking the antibiotic, compared to six cases of STIs among men taking doxycycline. This translated into a risk reduction of 70%.

The second study, published in Lancet Infectious Diseases, tested whether doxycycline prevented STIs in HIV-negative MSM taking PrEP. In this study, 232 participants were randomized to take 200 mg of doxycycline on demand , or to not take an antibiotic.

A total of 73 participants presented with a new STI during the study period, 45 in the no-antibiotic group and 28 who were taking doxycycline. This translated into a risk reduction of 47%, with the antibiotic significantly reducing the number of chlamydia and syphilis infections .

Drug Interactions Of Doxycycline Monohydrate Vs Hyclate

Doxycycline monohydrate and doxycycline hyclate have the same drug interactions.

Doxycycline can interact with certain drugs, including:

  • Antacids: Antacids that contain calcium, magnesium, iron, or aluminum can interfere with the absorption and bioavailability of doxycycline, making doxycycline less effective.
  • Blood thinners such as Coumadin : If these drugs are taken together, the blood thinner dose may need to be lowered, to reduce the risk of bleeding.
  • Anticonvulsants such as phenobarbital, Tegretol , or Dilantin can interfere with the absorption of doxycycline, making doxycycline less effective.
  • Doxycycline can make oral contraceptives less effective. A backup method of birth control should be used. Talk with your doctor about using effective non-hormonal birth control if needed while taking doxycycline, such as a condom and spermicide.
  • Isotretinoin, which is the ingredient found in drugs such as Accutane, Absorica, Sotret, and others. Both isotretinoin and doxycycline can cause intracranial hypertension and should not be taken together.
  • Penicillin: Doxycycline generally should not be taken with penicillin.

This is not a full list of drug interactions, and others may occur. Before taking doxycycline monohydrate or doxycycline hyclate, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

Warnings For Other Groups

For pregnant women: There are no adequate studies on the use of doxycycline in pregnant women.

Talk to your doctor if youre pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Ask your doctor to tell you about the specific risk to the pregnancy. This drug should only be used if the potential risk to the pregnancy is acceptable given the drugs potential benefit. Call your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking this drug.

For women who are breastfeeding: Doxycycline passes into breast milk and may cause side effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk to your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking this medication.

For seniors: The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects.

For children: This drug may cause tooth discoloration at the time teeth are developing.

This drug should not be used in children who are 8 years of age or younger unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk. In these children, its use is recommended for the treatment of severe or life-threatening conditions such as anthrax or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and when no other treatments are available or have been shown to work.

Quality Of The Evidence

Efficacy

Studies on Doxy PEP/PrEP used 2 doxycycline dose/regimen options: 100 mg daily or 200 mg single-dose postcondomless sex event . Investigators selected those regimens from experience with doxycycline prophylaxis in other infectious diseases and the minimum inhibitory concentration of TP . The efficacy of doxycycline for pre- or postexposure prophylaxis has yet to be definitively determined. While the 2 randomized controlled trials conducted to date had similar levels of efficacy , the estimated effect sizes were imprecise because of modest sample sizes . Additionally, it is unknown which specific sex acts were protected. Studies underway will lead to more precise measures of overall efficacy and efficacy for specific sexual behaviors. Those measures are important to inform clinical decision making, cost-effectiveness analyses, community education, and patient counseling.

Treatment Adherence And Safety

In the azithromycin group, two participants vomited azithromycin within 1 hour after taking it, and a second dose was administered successfully. In the doxycycline group, 77% of participants received 14 doses because of the logistic challenges inherent in conducting the study in youth correctional facilities, 2% of participants received 11 doses, 3% received 12 doses, 12% received 13 doses, 6% received 15 doses, and 1% received 16 doses. No participants were excluded from the per-protocol population because they received an insufficient number of doxycycline doses. Adverse events were reported by 23% of the participants in the azithromycin group and by 27% of the participants in the doxycycline group the most common adverse events reported in both groups were gastrointestinal symptoms. No severe or serious adverse events occurred, and no participants discontinued participation in the study because of an adverse event.

Doxycycline Resistance And T Pallidum

Although serological failure, defined as a lack of 4-fold decline in rapid plasma reagin titres following therapy, was observed in patients treated with doxycycline , no resistance study that could explain treatment failure was conducted and currently a unique study concerns doxycycline resistance of T. pallidum. In this study, Xiao et al. investigated the presence of the G1058C point mutation in the 16S rRNA gene associated with decreased susceptibility to doxycycline and found no mutation among 2253 whole blood specimens sampled from Chinese patients with secondary or latent syphilis between 2013 and 2015.
