How Can I Prevent Contracting Trichomoniasis

4 Hidden Signs of Trichomoniasis

Being sexually active puts people at risk for contracting an STI. Using condoms during every sex act can greatly reduce the risk of contracting trichomoniasis . Condoms should be used not just during ejaculation, but before any genital or sexual contact starts.

Ask all partners whether theyâve been tested recently for STIs before starting sexual contact. If a partner has sex with multiple people, ask about their STI status and encourage them to also get tested. Limiting the number of sexual partners you are exposed to will also decrease your risk of contracting trichomoniasis and other STIs.

If unprotected sex has occurred, or if symptoms of a trichomoniasis infection are present, visit your healthcare provider or local STI clinic for screening tests.

In addition, practices like douching should be avoided, as this may actually increase chances of contracting an STI .

Most Importantly Remember How Long Trichomoniasis Can Live In A Body:

Heres one last bit of hope. For partners hoping for a more realistic source of infection, keep in mind the length of time that trichomoniasis can live in a body. Due to the stealthy nature of the infection, a person may unknowingly carry trich for months without realizing it.

In this sense, this can be a bright light for concerned couples. After all, it is possible that your partner may have been infected during a previous sexual encounter, but was never aware of the infection. Now that the symptoms are present, it seems like a brand new case of trich. Of course, it is also possible that you were infected by a past encounter and never realized it. No matter what, the most important piece of the puzzle is that you and your partner test regularly.

What Complications Can Occur If The Infection Is Not Properly Treated

Untreated or improperly treated trichomoniasis can result in an infection that can increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease and cervical neoplasia a possible precursor to cervical cancer in women. Pregnant women with trichomoniasis are at higher risk for having pre-term or low birth weight babies. Men are sometimes asymptomatic, resulting in chronic infection and re-infection of partner. In men, infection may lead to inflammation of the urethra and chronic prostatitis. In both men and women, trichomoniasis is a risk factor for HIV and is associated with infertility.

Complications From Chlamydia And Gonorrhea

Because these two diseases often have no symptoms, some people go untreated.

Even with those who have symptoms, stigma, access, or other reasons get in the way of getting medical attention.

Not receiving prompt and proper treatment can create serious health problems.

For women, chlamydia and gonorrhea that goes untreated can spread through your uterus to your fallopian tubes.

Fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus and transport fertilized eggs during pregnancy. If untreated bacteria that cause gonorrhea and chlamydia spread to this area, the result is pelvic inflammatory disease , affecting around 5% of women in the US.

Pelvic inflammatory disease, similar to chlamydia and gonorrhea, can have no symptoms or just some pelvic or abdominal pain initially.

Unfortunately, PID can do permanent damage to a womens reproductive system, including:

For men, gonorrhea and chlamydia can also lead to serious health problems.

It is uncommon for either to cause infertility in men, but sometimes the infection can spread past the penis causing fever or pain.

One difference is that chlamydia can also spread to the urethra, causing Non-Gonococcal urethritis, which is an infection of the tube that carries urine resulting in inflammation, pain, and fever.

This cannot be caused by the bacteria that causes gonorrhea. However, for both diseases, it is possible for either to cause:

Std Awareness: Will Stds Go Away On Their Own

ByAnna C.|April 25, 2016, noon

Pictured above:

Can gonorrhea go away without treatment? Does chlamydia eventually clear up? Can trichomoniasis go away on its own? These are the kinds of questions people pose to Google before Google sends them here at least thats what I learned by looking at the blogs stats. Theyre tricky questions to tackle, and for so many reasons.

Some viral STDs stay with you for life, such as herpes and HIV. Others, such as hepatitis B and human papillomavirus , can be prevented with vaccines but cannot be cured. Its also possible for the immune system to defeat hepatitis B virus and HPV but in some cases, these viruses are able to settle in for the long haul, causing chronic infections that can endure for life and even lead to cancer.

Left untreated, syphilis can kill, and gonorrhea can cause infertility.

Non-viral STDs, like chlamydia and gonorrhea, can be cured. However, they usually dont have symptoms, or symptoms can come and go, making it seem like an infection went away when it actually didnt. You cant know your STD status without getting tested, and you cant self-diagnose an STD based on symptoms and then assume the infection went away when symptoms subside. Getting tested can uncover a problem and clear the way for treatment.

How Do You Test For Trichomoniasis

Getting tested for trichomoniasis is easy and doesnt hurt. A healthcare professional will examine you and take a swab from the vagina or the penis. Sometimes men will also be asked to give a urine sample.

If you find out that you have trichomoniasis you should test for other STIs. You will need to tell any recent sexual partners so they can also get tested and treated. You can ask your healthcare professional for advice about this.

Beside above, can chlamydia be mistaken for a UTI? Viral infections of the urinary tract are also uncommon. In some instances, bacteria that would cause an STD can cause urinary tract infections. Chlamydia can cause an infection of the urinary tract, and the symptoms of a UTI caused by chlamydia can differ from typical UTIs.

Similarly, can an untreated yeast infection turn into chlamydia?

So is burning while peeinganother thing people may attribute to yeast infections. When left untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which can in turn cause infertility. Luckily, these STIs are both treatable once you see a doctor.

Can HPV be mistaken for a yeast infection?

What Is Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a very common sexually transmitted infection that is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Although not as commonly discussed as other more âfamousâ STIs , trichomoniasis is actually estimated to be the most common non-viral STI in the United States .

Huh? How can trichomoniasis be so common, and Iâve never even heard of it? I thought chlamydia and gonorrhea were the most common STIs?

Not quite. In the United States, trichomoniasis is not required to be reported to the Centers for Disease Control . Currently, Trichomonas vaginalis infections are not considered reportable conditions because of the low severity of health outcomes, the low cost associated with treatment, difficulty in prevention, and low public interest/concern .

The most prevalent STI in the United States is estimated to be human papillomavirus , followed by genital herpes , both of which are not reported diseases to the CDC . Trichomoniasis comes in next, estimated to be the third most-prevalent STI in the United States . This is why chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common reported STIs in the US, and trichomoniasis is the most common non-viral STI. These small words make a huge difference when understanding disease prevalence across the country.

What If I Am Pregnant

Trichomoniasis can cause babies to be born early or with low birth weight. If you think you may be pregnant be sure to tell your healthcare provider. Women in the first three months of pregnancy should not take medicine for trich because it might hurt the baby. You can take medicine after the first three months. Talk to your healthcare provider about them.

What Increases Your Risk

Painful ejaculation

Behaviors that will increase your risk of getting trichomoniasis include:

  • Not using condoms when having sex with a new partner or a partner who may have been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection . It is possible for a partner to transmit the trich parasite without having any symptoms of the infection.
  • Having many sex partners, which increases your risk of being exposed to someone who has trich. Teenagers and young adults are at higher risk for getting trich and other STIs, because their sex partners often have had other recent partners who may carry an STI.

You can get other STIs, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, and syphilis, at the same time you get a trich infection. If one STI is diagnosed, testing for other STIs should be done so that all infections can be treated at the same time.

Some infections that can be spread through sexual contact, such as the human immunodeficiency virus infection, are life-threatening. Studies show that trich infection may increase the risk of transmitting HIV infection.footnote 2 Health professionals around the world are concerned about the increased risk of trichomoniasis and HIV.

Women who have trich may also be at risk for other vaginal infections such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis.

What Your Chlamydia Gonorrhea And Trichomoniasis Test Results Mean

All three sexually transmitted diseases need to be routinely tested, to have an early diagnosis and prevent further complications. A positive test, for any of these three infections, indicate an ongoing infection that needs to be treated properly with a prescription medication, such as antibiotics.

A positive gonorrhea test indicates an active infection with the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. A positive chlamydia test indicates an active infection with the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. A positive Trichomoniasis test indicates an active infection with the Trichomoniasis vaginalis parasite. If your results came in positive for any of these sexually-transmitted diseases, keep in mind that both you are your partner would need to abstain from any sexual activity. Do not engage in anal, oral or vaginal sex, not until you are both fully treated and free of the infection. With the right treatment, an infection normally clears up in a couple of weeks. You are required to get re-tested, three months after to detect a possible re-infection.

A negative gonorrhea or chlamydia test result indicates the absence of an active infection caused by any of these two bacteria. A negative Trichomoniasis test indicates the absence of the parasite. It also indicates that the symptoms may be due to other underlying causes. However, if trichomoniasis is still suspected, other tests t may be needed to have a more accurate diagnosis.
