How Does It Spread
Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis that can live in semen or vaginal fluids. It spreads during unprotected anal, oral, or vaginal sex, usually between a man and a woman or between two women. Keep in mind that a man doesnt have to ejaculate to give his partner the parasite. In can also be spread by sharing sex toys.
In men, the parasite usually infects the urethra inside the penis. In women, it can infect the:
70 percent of people with the infection dont show any symptoms.
People can also carry the parasite for many months without knowing it. This means that your partner may have gotten it from a past relationship and only just started showing symptoms. It also means that you might have developed an infection in a past relationship and unknowingly passed it to your current partner.
Still, theres always a slim chance that you or your partner developed it from something nonsexual, such as:
- Toilets. Trichomoniasis can be picked up from a toilet seat if its damp. Using an outdoor toilet may be an added risk, since it puts you in closer contact with others urine and feces.
- In from Zambia, the parasite spread through bathwater that was used by multiple girls.
- Public pools. The parasite can spread if the water in the pool isnt cleaned.
- Clothing or towels. Its possible to spread the parasite if you share damp clothing or towels with someone.
Extended And Combined Therapies
When metronidazole is the only approved treatment of trichomoniasis, a treatment regimen for refractory infection involves increased doses of oral metronidazole for extended periods. Extended therapy is effective in only about 80% of these patients . In cases in which trichomonad drug resistance is very high and toxic levels of metronidazole are required, administration of the drug intravenously or in combination with oral and vaginal therapy may minimize side effects. One treatment protocol is available that recommends regimens for marginal, low, moderate, and high levels of metronidazole resistance . This highlights the need for metronidazole susceptibility testing in refractory T. vaginalis infection, as well as the need for alternate therapies to avoid increasing resistance in wild-type strains as a result of increased metronidazole pressure.
How Do You Prevent Chlamydia
Chlamydia can be passed on by sharing sex toys. Always cover sex toys with a new condom and wash them after use to reduce your risk of getting chlamydia and other STIs.
Its important to regularly test for chlamydia, even if you dont have any symptoms, especially if youve had multiple sexual partners.
The contraceptive pill and other types of contraception wont prevent you getting chlamydia, and neither will PrEP.

What Is The Best Home Remedy For Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis symptoms typically resemble symptoms of fungal or bacterial vaginosis, which many patients treat using over-the-counter topical medications and natural remedies. Home treatment of T. vaginalis, however, is ineffective. Trichomoniasis will require antibiotic treatment to clear the infection and reduce the risk of transmission.
Some individual studies, however, have shown that natural remedies may relieve the symptoms of a T. vaginalis infection or actually clear the infection. These include
None of these studies, however, have been verified, so they should be approached with caution. Still, they may be advised to patients with drug-resistant trichomoniasis that does not respond to nitroimidazole treatment.
As with antibiotic treatment, home treatment will require regular testing by a healthcare professional or using a home testing kit. Natural remedies may eradicate symptoms, but it is uncertain if they can clear the infection. Even if symptoms go away, the patient can still infect their sexual partners.

Treatment Of Pregnant Women And Children
Use of metronidazole during pregnancy has been debated because the drug is known to cross the placenta. In addition, metronidazole is mutagenic in bacteria and carcinogenic in mice, so that teratogenicity has been a concern . This has led the Food and Drug Administration to classify metronidazole as a class B risk factor for pregnancy, a possible but unconfirmed risk to the fetus. Therefore, the drug has been contraindicated in the first trimester and is considered a second line of therapy in the latter stage of pregnancy.
More recent retrospective analyses, however, have failed to establish a link between metronidazole exposure during pregnancy and birth defects . This fact, coupled with the known risk of pregnancy complications associated with T. vaginalis infection, has led many clinicians and researchers to propose that the risk to the fetus from a maternal trichomoniasis is far greater than any risk related to metronidazole exposure. As such, a single 2-g dose of metronidazole is the treatment currently recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for women at any stage of pregnancy. Alternatively, a daily intravaginal dose of 100 mg of clotrimazole for 6 days can provide temporary relief in the first trimester, followed by standard metronidazole therapy in the second trimester.

What Will Happen If Trichomoniasis Is Left Untreated
The patients immune system may clear trichomoniasis or reduce symptoms without treatment. However, untreated trichomoniasis can be spread to other sexual partners even without symptoms. Also, untreated trichomoniasis in pregnant women is linked to premature delivery and low birth weight. A T. vaginalis infection also increases the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually-transmitted infections. In men, an untreated infection can spread to the prostate gland or epididymis and could lead to infertility.

Can One Partner Have Trichomoniasis And Not The Other
Women or men who have sex exclusively with a single partner can catch any STI that partner may have, including trichomoniasis, if they have unprotected sex. Most men and almost half of women do not show symptoms of a T. vaginalis infection, so the risk of being unknowingly infected with T. vaginalis by a single partner is higher than it is with other STIs.
What Is The Best Medication For Trichomoniasis
The drugs of choice for trichomoniasis are the nitroimidazole antibiotics metronidazole and tinidazole. The optimal choice will depend on the patients allergies to these drugs, the organisms drug resistance, the presence of HIV infection, and the persistence of the infection.

Cdc Updates Guidelines On Treatment Of Sexually Transmitted Infections
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its guidelines for the treatment of people who have or are at risk for sexually transmitted infection .
Key changes were made to treatment recommendations for Neisseriagonorrhoeae, Chlamydiatrachomatis, Trichomonasvaginalis, pelvic inflammatory disease and
Along with the AAP Red Book, the guidelines are a source of clinical guidance for the diagnosis, management and treatment of STIs based on current evidence.
Adolescent screening recommendations
Reported rates of STI, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, continue to rise across the U.S. Prevalence rates of certain STIs are highest among adolescents and young adults .
The CDC continues to recommend routine laboratory screening for common STIs for all sexually active AYA.
It also suggests providers consider opt-out screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea for AYA females regardless of reported sexual activity as part of a clinical visit. Cost-effectiveness analyses indicate that opt-out chlamydia screening among AYA females could increase screening significantly, save costs and identify STIs among youths who do not disclose their sexual behavior.
Chlamydia continues to be the most commonly reported notifiable infectious disease in the U.S., and prevalence rates are highest among sexually active females ages 15-24.
If chlamydial co-infection cannot be excluded, doxycycline 100 mg orally twice daily for seven days should be added.

Trichomoniasis Can Be Treated
Treatment is recommended for all people with trichomoniasis infection, as an infected person may be able to spread the infection to sexual partners even if they don’t have symptoms.
If you are a woman, you will need to cure the infection before you get pregnant because it can cause adverse effects on the baby.
Trichomoniasis is treated with a specific group of medications known as nitroimidazoles, which are used orally . The cream or lotion formulations of these medications cannot adequately treat trichomoniasis infections when they are applied to the infected area, even though they can be useful in treating other genital infections.
How Do I Know If I Have An Sti
Dont wait until you show symptoms, as you might never get any. If youve had unprotected sex then its important to get tested to make sure that you dont have an STI. Especially because infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea can be symptomless, you run the risk of infecting your partner, or any future partner.
You can visit a sexual health clinic to get tested where they will ask you questions about your sexual history before examining you. The tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea involve giving a urine sample and possibly a swab test from the vagina. If you prefer, you can order a test kit online to do at home.
If you test positive for one, or think that you have symptoms of one, then its advisable to get tested for all common STIs. It is possible to have multiple sexually transmitted infections.

How Does A Doctor Diagnose Trichomoniasis
It can be detected in symptomatic women by examining the vaginal discharge. In a symptomatic person, the culture for genital fluid or a DNA test may help the diagnosis.
If you are a woman, see your gynecologist
- On days other than when you have your monthly period
- And do not have sex for at least 24 hours before the exam or use condoms
Your gynecologist may
- Take vaginal fluid samples with a cotton swab and/or
- Examine it under the microscope
- Send the vaginal fluid samples for a culture test .
- Send the sample for a DNA test.
The parasite is harder to detect in men than in women. However, it can be detected easily by culture tests for genital fluid in both the genders. A recently available DNA test is more accurate and can be done in both the genders. It can be done with vaginal fluid or a urine sample.
Antibiotics For Chlamydia And Gonorrhea
At times, an individual infected with gonorrhea also suffers from Chlamydia which is also a sexually transmitted disease. The bacterium causing Chlamydia is also responsible for infections of the eyes in humans. Aside from the infections it causes to man, they also pose harm to species of birds and a number of livestock.
The antibiotics used to treat both gonorrhea and Chlamydia kills the bacteria in the body but should be prescribed by a doctor after a positive diagnosis of gonorrhea through a test. However, antibiotics are not enough but it should be accompanied with abstinence of any form of sexual contact for a period of at least 7 days to prevent complications. If antibiotics are given to cure pregnant women, the disease can be prevented from being transmitted to the unborn child.
Strictly following the instructions of the doctor in taking the dosage of antibiotics can lead to completely curing the disease. Unfortunately, it has been found out that some strains of pathogens have become resistant to antibiotics making killing the bacteria impossible. Some of these drugs are quinolines, tetracycline, penicillin and sulfa drugs.
Today, since gonorrhea is accompanied by Chlamydia infection, the type of treatment given to the person should address both diseases. A person receiving antibiotics should be careful not to miss the doses, because if he fails to do so, the whole treatment procedure becomes useless.

How Is Each Condition Transmitted
Both STIs are caused by bacterial infections that are transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, meaning sex without using a condom, dental dam, or another protective barrier between you and your partner during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
Its also possible to contract the infection through sexual contact that doesnt involve penetration. For example, if your genitals come into contact with the genitals of someone whos contracted the infection, its possible to develop the condition.
Both STIs can also be contracted through protected sex with a condom or other barrier if you dont use protection properly, or if the barrier breaks.
Either STI can be contracted even if you arent showing visible symptoms. Both STIs can also be transmitted to a child at birth if the mother has either condition.
Youre at increased risk for developing these and other STIs if you:
- have multiple sexual partners at one time
- dont properly use protection, such as condoms, female condoms, or dental dams
- regularly use douches which can irritate your vagina, killing healthy vaginal bacteria
- have contracted an STI before
Sexual assault can also increase your risk of both chlamydia or gonorrhea.
Both STIs can be diagnosed using similar diagnostic methods. Your doctor may use one or more of these tests to ensure that the diagnosis is accurate and that the right treatment is given:
