A note from Cleveland Clinic

A chlamydia test is essential to limiting the spread of this sexually transmitted infection. Its especially important to get screened for chlamydia regularly if youre at a higher risk of this STI. Untreated, the infection can cause health problems and you can spread it to your partner. While youre waiting for results and during treatment, avoid having sex. Wait until your provider says its safe to have sex again. Be sure to use a condom and practice safe sex to avoid getting an STI.

What Are Std Symptoms And When Do They Usually Happen

Women usually dont have STD symptoms that prompt them to get tested when an STD is detected its typically because a woman has been screened based on her reporting of sexual activity. If symptoms do appear, they may take a few weeks to develop. In addition, STD symptoms can be difficult to tell apart from those of a urinary tract infection or bacterial vaginosis.

  • Pain deep inside during sex

  • Burning and pain with urine or with bowel movements

  • Having to go to the bathroom often

Until after the pandemic emergency response is over, the CDC has advised that women with symptoms should be prioritized for testing and treatment and that routine screening should be postponed. But women without symptoms still have options for testing and can seek treatment if they test positive for an STD.

STD symptoms for men can vary, and some infections dont cause external symptoms. For STDs like gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia, symptoms can include:

  • Painful urination

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the groin

  • Use latex condoms the right way every time you have sex.
  • PrEP, Pre Exposure Prophylaxis, a pill taken daily to prevent HIV infection, will NOT protect you from chlamydia. PrEP is also known by the brand name Truvada or Descovy.

While Atlanta, Georgia is a thriving city filled with opportunity and culture, it also struggles with its rates of STD infections. In fact, the rate with which HIV is spread through the city has been the focus of several news stories as well as a serious concern for local health organizations. While gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia are all areas of concern, the HIV rates in Atlanta have become an issue spotlighted nationally and locally.

According to a recent study, the facts about HIV in Atlanta are alarming:

    • Gay men who are sexually active make up the largest proportion, 51%, of people living with HIV in Atlanta.
    • 16% of Atlanta based HIV cases are the result of IV drug use
    • The rate for women with AIDS has climbed from 4% to 19% since 1987.
    • Fully half of new HIV infection cases are found in younger people between the ages of 16 24.

Rates for other STDs also continue to rise in the area. A closer look at the rates of all STDs reveals not only a general, though slight, rise in some STDs but also shows which groups of the local population are most at risk.

These rates show that women and minorities remain the most vulnerable, a trend which has been repeated in many other cities and suggests that outreach and education focused on these groups is more important than ever before.

China Rapid Free Chlamydia Test Kit

If you are sexually active, getting tested for STDs is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health. Make sure you have an open and honest conversation about your sexual history and STD testing with your doctor and ask whether you should be tested for STDs. If you are not comfortable talking with your regular health care provider about STDs, there are many clinics that provide confidential and free or low-cost testing.

Below is a brief overview of STD testing recommendations. STD screening information for healthcare providers can be found here.

Gp Surgeries And Sexual Health Clinics

Many GP surgeries offer STI testing but not all. The easiest way to find out is to ring up and ask. If you’ve changed GPs since starting at uni to one in your university town, ring up your new GP to find out.

If they do offer STI testing, they’ll book you in for an appointment. If not, they’ll direct you towards the nearest service which does.

This will normally be in the form of a sexual health clinic or GUM clinic, which are just like your local doctors but they specialise in sexual health.

Visiting your doctors or a sexual health clinic is the easiest way to get a free STI test. In some cases, the service might even be on campus, so you won’t have to travel far. Your university may have a page on sexual health resources for students, so that may be a good place to start when finding out about services in your area.

Remember to visit after any time you have unprotected sex. Don’t wait around for your yearly check-up if you have any doubts!
