How Long Does It Take To Show Up In The Throat

Symptoms of chlamydia in your throat are typically caused by having oral sex with someone whos contracted the infection.

Its much less common to notice throat symptoms, but they may still appear after a week or so, up to a few months or longer.

STI tests that look for chlamydia arent always done on the throat since its an area that does not carry the infection often. Ask your doctor for a throat swab or other chlamydia test if you think youve been exposed through oral sex.

Here are the most common symptoms of chlamydia in both people with penises and people with vulvas.

How Can I Prevent Chlamydia

It’s easier to prevent an STI like chlamydia than it is to treat it:

  • Don’t have more than one sex partner at a time. The safest sex is with one partner who has sex only with you. Every time you add a new sex partner, you are being exposed to all of the infections that all of their partners may have.
  • Use a condom every time you have sex. Latex and polyurethane condoms keep out the viruses and bacteria that cause STIs.
  • Be responsible. Don’t have sex if you have symptoms of an infection or if you are being treated for an STI.
  • Wait to have sex with a new partner until both of you have been tested for STIs.

Why Should I Have Treatment If I Have No Symptoms

Can you have Chlamydia for years? Even though you are not experiencing any symptoms and you are infected with chlamydia, it is still highly necessary to get treatment. Without proper treatment, the infection may spread and cause other severe complications even after months or years of getting the infection. Moreover, there is a danger of passing the infection to your sexual partners even if there are no signs and symptoms.

How Is Chlamydia Treated

Chlamydia can be cleared up with antibiotics in about a week or two. But dont stop taking your medication just because your symptoms improve. Ask your provider about what follow-up is needed to be sure your infection is gone after youve finished taking your medicine.

Part of your treatment should also include avoiding sexual activities that could cause you to get re-infected and ensuring that any sexual partners who may be infected also get treatment. You should:

  • Abstain from sex until your infection has cleared up. Starting treatment doesnt mean that youre in the clear. Take all your medication as your provider directs, and avoid all sexual contact in the meantime.
  • Contact all sexual partners. Tell any sexual partners from the last 3 months that youre infected so that they can get tested, too.
  • Get tested for other STIs . Its common to have multiple STIs, and its important to receive treatment thats tailored to each infection.

Antibiotics can get rid of your infection, but they cant reverse any harm the bacteria may have caused to your body before treatment. This is why its so important to get screened regularly for chlamydia, to see your provider at the first sign of symptoms, and get treatment immediately if youre infected.

Newborn infants are also at risk for chlamydial infections if their mother has an untreated infection at the time of delivery. Newborn infants can contract chlamydia trachomatis as they travel through the birth canal and develop eye infections or pneumonia . For this reason, chlamydia testing should be routine during pregnancy.

Having an STI, like chlamydia, can also increase your chances of contracting HIV if you are exposed it to it, or spreading HIV if you are already infected . If you think you have chlamydia, or any STI, it is important for you to seek help immediately from your healthcare provider or an STI clinic. Many clinics provide free or low-cost STI testing. This will all help keep you, your sexual partners, and your community healthy.

Chlamydia Infection: Treatments & Home Remedies

Because chlamydia cannot be transferred via saliva, you are not at risk of contracting the infection from kissing. Nonsexual contact is safe because, again, it is only spread through anal, vaginal, and/or oral sex.

However, it is worth pointing out that ejaculation does not have to occur to spread chlamydia, so anytime you are having sex without protection, youâre putting yourself at risk for any sort of sexually transmitted infection.

How Do People Get Chlamydia

Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus of an infected partner. Ejaculation does not have to occur for chlamydia to be transmitted or acquired. Chlamydia can also be spread perinatally from an untreated mother to her baby during childbirth, resulting in ophthalmia neonatorum or pneumonia in some exposed infants. In published prospective studies, chlamydial conjunctivitis has been identified in 18-44% and chlamydial pneumonia in 3-16% of infants born to women with untreated chlamydial cervical infection at the time of delivery.9-12 While rectal or genital chlamydial infection has been shown to persist one year or longer in infants infected at birth,13 the possibility of sexual abuse should be considered in prepubertal children beyond the neonatal period with vaginal, urethral, or rectal chlamydial infection.

People who have had chlamydia and have been treated may get infected again if they have sexual contact with a person infected with chlamydia.14

How Long Can You Have Chlamydia Without Having Symptoms

Studies show that adults can have chlamydia for years without any symptoms. It is possible to have a long-term infection without getting pain or discharge. In women, the rate of chlamydia without symptoms may be as high as 70%. It is believed that at least 50% of men with chlamydia may have no symptoms.

A baby who gets chlamydia from the mother during birth can also have chlamydia for years without symptoms.

But the infection is not “dormant”, it can cause damage even without causing symptoms. Women who are later diagnosed with tubal infertility or ectopic pregnancy are three times more likely to have antibodies showing prior exposure to chlamydia, which suggests that they may have had damage to the tubes without having symptoms of pain.It is possible, but usually the symptoms will show up within several weeks.Virtually, this is highly unlikely.

What Happens If An Std Sits Dormant In Your Body For Too Long

Like any other type of infection or disease, it is never a good idea for a disease to run rampant throughout your body. Every day that your STD is left unchecked, its strength will grow, and It will become more resistant to antibiotics or other forms of treatment. It will continue to damage the tissue in and around your genitals and any other place that it decides to damage while in your circulatory system.

Many infections cause inflammation, and that can lead to permanent damage to vital organs within your torso. And since the genitals are connected to the urinary tract, youre likely to develop a bladder infection or a severe UTI.

If you suspect that you have an STD, it is always a good idea to get yourself checked out with an STD lab testing instead of waiting for other symptoms to develop. It is possible that you wont have the same type of symptoms that another person has. Waiting until there are more obvious symptoms could cause long-term permanent damage. Your sexual partners will not know that you are infected either. Therefore, they wont be aware that they have an STD in the body as well.

But you do not need to rely on visible symptoms when you have an STD testing kit.

Can You Have Chlamydia For 5 Years Without Knowing

If untreated, chlamydia can develop into serious reproductive and other health problems with both short-term and long-term effects. The damage is often silent.

10 percent to 15 percent women with untreated chlamydia will suffer with pelvic inflammatory disease.

Problems among men are rare. Infection can cause epididymitis, a painful condition of the testicles that can lead to infertility if not treated.

Chlamydia infection can cause reactive arthritis, formerly known as Reiters syndrome, although this is rare. Symptoms include arthritis, skin lesions and swelling of the eye and urethra.

You Wont Immediately Know If You Or Your Partner Have Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a serious disease, but if you or your partner become infected, you might not know right away. Early-stage infections often dont cause symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can be easily overlooked.

If you have unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex, you could get chlamydia. While its possible to get chlamydia through any of these sex acts, the risk varies depending on the type of sex youre having.

For most women with chlamydia, the infection doesnt cause any symptoms. About half of men dont experience symptoms, either. This is why its so important to get tested regularly. For sexually active women under 25, yearly testing is recommended. Women who are over 25 should get tested when they have new partners or have other risk factors for chlamydia.

If symptoms occur, they usually start one to three weeks after infection. In women, these symptoms may include vaginal discharge, pain during sex, or painful urination. For men, signs of chlamydia may include discharge from the penis or pain in the testicles. Since these symptoms are relatively mild, its easy to overlook them.

    Can You Prevent Chlamydia

You can lower your risk of getting chlamydia and other STIs by:

    • using a condom every time you have vaginal, oral or anal sex
    • not having sex with someone with chlamydia, even with a condom, until theyve finished treatment and 1 week has passed since their last dose of antibiotics
    • regularly getting tested for STIs, especially if you are under 30 and sexually active

Remember that most people with chlamydia dont show any symptoms and dont know they have it, so feeling ‘well’ does not mean that you or your partner are not infected. If in doubt, get tested.

If you have chlamydia, you can help reduce the spread by letting your recent sexual partners know so they can get tested and treated.

Chlamydia infects the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Untreated chlamydia can also result to pelvic inflammatory disease. Moreover, chlamydia can cause abdominal pain, inflammation of pelvic organs, and pain during sex. Untreated chlamydia can also affect your pregnancy.

Another danger of chlamydia is having ectopic pregnancy. For women who got infected with chlamydia while pregnant, there is the danger of passing the infection to the infant especially during vaginal child birth. If this happens, the infant is at risk of having eye infections, and pneumonia.
