Can I Get Chlamydia From Kissing

Should I Get Tested For Oral Stds

Complications: TORCH Infections, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS – Maternity Nursing -@Level Up RN

It depends. According to the CDC, only two groups of people need to have regular testing for oral STDs:

1) Women should get tested as needed, based on their reported sexual behaviors and exposure.2) Men who have oral sex with men should get tested at least once a year.

If you think youve been exposed to an STD, notice blisters or sores in your mouth, or have other symptoms talk to your provider. They can help you understand whether oral STD testing is right for you.

Testing is available for these oral STDs:

Keep in mind: Theres currently no FDA-approved test for oral HPV.

Is There A Way To Prevent Stds From Kissing

Abstinence is the only way to completely prevent oral STDs. But kissing is enjoyable, and may even have some health benefits.

If you like kissing, here are some strategies for lowering your chances of getting an oral STD:

  • Avoid kissing if you or your partner have any sores or cuts in the mouth.

  • Dont bite while kissing.

  • Dont brush or floss right before/after kissing.

  • Practice good, regular dental hygiene.

  • Avoid kissing if you feel sick.

  • If you enjoy using your mouth for other sexual activities, like oral sex, use a barrier like a dental dam or condom.

  • Get vaccinated against HPV and hepatitis B.

Can You Catch Any Stis From Kissing

There are only a couple of STIs that you actually can get through kissing. Herpes simplex virus is the virus that causes cold sores and genital herpes, and this can be spread easily through kissing, especially when sores are open and visible.

Its easier to catch HSV-1 through kissing than it is to catch HSV-2 . However, mouth-to-mouth transmission is still possible, and if you do contract the virus then you will live with it forever, as the body cannot expel the virus completely.

Even though herpes cant be cured, there are antiviral medications available to treat symptoms and minimise the number of flare-ups and outbreaks you experience.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection, so it is curable with a short course of antibiotics. Its important to catch syphilis as early as possible to avoid any long-term complications and to prevent the spread of the disease.

How Common Is Gonorrhea

The study has attracted headlines because gonorrhea and other STIs are on the rise in all populations, not just in men who have sex with men .According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2017, 555,608 cases of gonorrhea were reported an 18.6% increase over the previous year and a 75.2% increase since 2009. Cases increased 19.3% in men and 17.8% in women .Health officials are concerned because more and more cases are proving resistant to current antibiotics, limiting the number of treatment options that are effective. in the past few years). Since there is no vaccine to prevent gonorrhea, and the possibility of untreatable gonorrhea is looming larger, it is imperative that we develop new drugs to treat it, Stephanie Taylor, MD, professor of medicine and microbiology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine told NBC News.

Commonly Known Stds That Can Be Spread Through Kissing

Chlamydia Infection Prevention and Risk Reduction

STIs are more commonly spread during oral sex or intercourse. Over 26 sexually transmitted infections may be passed on through sexual contact, and a vast majority of these infections include contact with genital fluids, sores, and the genitals. But did you know that there are few that can be passed through kissing?

This may be a low-risk sexual activity or a simple display of affection for many individuals, but there are a few STDs that can be passed on through kissing, especially when an individual has active symptoms or infections, such as oral sores. Here are 4 STDs you should know that can be spread through kissing.

1. Syphilis

As a bacterial infection, syphilis can be spread from direct oral contact with a syphilis sore. Most of these sores are found on the lips, in the mouth, and on genitals. These sores are typically firm, round, and painless, and can heal within 3 to 6 weeks.

Over time, the individual with a syphilis infection may see a reddish-brown rash develop on the palms of their hands, on the soles of their feet, or sometimes both. As these rashes do not cause any itch, the individual may not notice it straight away.

2. Herpes

HSV-1 is the most common oral herpes that causes ulcers, painful blisters or sores that are formed within, around, or on the lips and the mouth of the infected individual. These skin lesions are often known and referred to as cold sores.

Can You Get An Std Without Having Sex

Yes. Weve compiled a list of 9 ways that you can get an STD without sex!

Considering the fact that the S in STD stands for sexually, it must be impossible to get STDs without doing the horizontal mambo, right? WRONG. STDs can spread without even having sex. Things like kissing a loved one or family member, conducting oral, sharing contaminated food, borrowing unclean towels, and more can transmit STDs like chlamydia, herpes, and hepatitis.

20 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections spread in the U.S. every year. Although sexual intercourse is a common way to contract an STD, you may be wondering how you wound up catching one yourself without having sex. Thats why weve put together a list of some of the most common ways people contract STDs without having sex.

    What Happens During Untreated Chlamydia

According to the HHS, if chlamydia goes untreated, women risk the infection developing into pelvic inflammatory disease, fallopian tube blockages with resulting infertility and ectopic pregnancies due to scar tissue.

Untreated chlamydia in men can result in pain and swelling of the testicles with accompanying fever. While a rare result, chlamydia can cause infertility in men.

Untreated chlamydia in both men and women may also increase the chance of contracting and spreading HIV.

    How Is Chlamydia Treated

Chlamydia can be cleared up with antibiotics in about a week or two. But dont stop taking your medication just because your symptoms improve. Ask your provider about what follow-up is needed to be sure your infection is gone after youve finished taking your medicine.

Part of your treatment should also include avoiding sexual activities that could cause you to get re-infected and ensuring that any sexual partners who may be infected also get treatment. You should:

    • Abstain from sex until your infection has cleared up. Starting treatment doesnt mean that youre in the clear. Take all your medication as your provider directs, and avoid all sexual contact in the meantime.
    • Contact all sexual partners. Tell any sexual partners from the last 3 months that youre infected so that they can get tested, too.
    • Get tested for other STIs . Its common to have multiple STIs, and its important to receive treatment thats tailored to each infection.

Antibiotics can get rid of your infection, but they cant reverse any harm the bacteria may have caused to your body before treatment. This is why its so important to get screened regularly for chlamydia, to see your provider at the first sign of symptoms, and get treatment immediately if youre infected.

How To Prevent The Risks Of Chlamydia

The only positive thing about this disease is that, unlike most sexually transmitted diseases, its curable and treatments can help you to completely rule out the disease. So if you are a chlamydia patient, taking proper medications as prescribed by your doctor is mandatory for the future of your life.

And there are a few other steps you can follow to be protective from contracting the virus from a diseased person.

Its better if you have one sexual partner and to be protected at all times when you are engaging in sexual activities. Using a condom also decreases the risk of infection.

And if you are a person who got cured of chlamydia you still have the risk of infecting it again if you have sexual interactions with a diseased person. So its important to discuss these matters with your partner. And get them the required medical attention too.

And last but not the least, if you feel like you may have the symptoms of the disease, its better to get tested and rule out the possibilities.

    How Common Is Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the most common STIs in the UK2. It is caused by a specific strain of bacteria known as Chlamydia trachomatis.

Chlamydia is passed on via unprotected sex and Govind says it is particularly common in sexually active teenagers and young adults.

It is recommended that, if you are sexually active and under the age of 25 in England, you should have a chlamydia test once a year, particularly if having sex with new or casual partners, and/or having sex without condoms.

If you are an adult under the age of 25 who has chlamydia, you should be offered another test 3-6 months after being treated for the infection. This is because there is an increased risk of under-25s catching it again.

As for over-25s, you should continue to practise safe sex and attend regular sexual health check-ups.
