A daily combination of high-dose amoxicillin and probenecid was an effective syphilis treatment in patients with HIV infection, according to results of a retrospective, observational study.

The efficacy of 3 g oral amoxicillin plus 750 mg probenecid daily was very high in early and late syphilis patients with HIV infection,Ryutaro Tanizaki, MD, of the AIDS Clinical Center in Tokyo, and colleagues wrote in Open Forum Infectious Diseases. The regimen was also highly tolerable and required only a single hospital visit.

The study included 286 men with HIV-1 infection who sought treatment for syphilis between January 2000 and June 2014. The syphilis diagnosis was based on serum rapid plasma reagin titers of 8 or higher and a positive Treponema pallidum hemagglutination test.

Patients were treated with 3 g oral amoxicillin plus probenecid, according to the researchers, who defined successful syphilis treatment as at least a fourfold decrease in RPR titer within 24 months of treatment initiation.

The overall treatment efficacy was 95.5% and was high in primary , secondary , early latent syphilis , late latent syphilis and syphilis of unknown duration .

Within 1 year, 96.3% of participants had a fourfold decrease in the RPR titer.

Disclosure: The researchers report no relevant financial disclosures.

However, the CDC does not recommend amoxicillin as an antibiotic for treating chlamydia. It is on their list of recommended medicines if youre pregnant and have this bacterial infection! So your doctor might prescribe it to help get rid of any trace amounts that are still inside yourself or else contribute towards scarring during labor & delivery .

What Can Be Done To Address The Problem

Klausner says a three-way approach is needed:

    • Control the spread of new infections through prevention, screening, and treatment. However, there is much less funding for such efforts. The CDC says that more than half of state and local STD programs have seen budget cuts in years. âThe money taken out of budgets absolutely correlates with the increases in cases of STDs that weâre seeing,â Englund says.
    • Develop new antibiotics. Thereâs good news here: A new antibiotic now being tested has shown promising results in recent trials. When and if it will be effective and enter the market is unknown.
    • Develop tests to identify the best treatments. Klausnerâs lab has developed a test, now in use at UCLA Health System, that can tell physicians which antibiotic a particular case of gonorrhea will respond to. This has allowed them to successfully treat many cases of gonorrhea with older, less expensive antibiotics.

    Zithromax, Azithromycin 250mg, 30 Tablets

In the case of uncomplicated and moderate urinary tract infections in the community, the empirical oral antibiotics nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, fosfomycin, pivmecillinam, fluoroquinolones as well as amoxicillin/clavulanate and oral cephalosporins are prescribed. A susceptibility study for 2017 SENTRY surveillance of E. coli isolates collected from US patients with UTI showed 77.9% susceptibility to amoxicillin/clavulanate . More published studies also point towards contemporary UTI-causing Enterobacterales showing reduced susceptibility to amoxicillin/clavulanate . This phenomenon is part of the larger trend of rising prevalence of extended spectrum beta-lactamases coupled with OXA-1. Moreover, TEM-1 hyperproduction has also been implicated in resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanate . It should be also noted that, as a result of systemic metabolism, urinary concentrations of clavulanate could be low at the recommended oral dose of 125 mg. Furthermore, no PK/PD data is available to support that the detected urinary levels of clavulanate are adequate to restore the amoxicillin activity against ESBL isolates. All these observations need to be considered regarding the current utility of orally administered amoxicillin/clavulanate for the treatment of community UTI infections that do not require hospitalization .

Does Amoxicillin Treat Std Infections Such As Gonorrhea

Now its time to discuss how to treat STDs with amoxicillin. Each STD is unique, so the treatment options will vary depending on the type of STD you have.

On the whole, gonorrhea tends to be treatable with common drugs such as penicillin, ampicillin, tetracycline and doxycycline. With several doses of amoxicillin or a similar drug, gonorrhea can be cured in a few days.

Antibiotics such as amoxicillin have been prescribed by doctors to treat gonorrhea in the past. Of course, even though Amoxicillin is one of the most well-known drugs, that doesnt mean that it is the primary drug of choice for treatment of gonorrhea. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that uncomplicated gonorrhea be treated only with the antibiotic ceftriaxone given as an injection in combination with either azithromycin or doxycycline two antibiotics that are taken orally.

According to the CDC, this combination of prescription medications will successfully treat gonorrhea, but it will not repair permanent damage caused by this STD. For this reason, its important to seek medical treatment right away to ensure you can get rid of this infection before it causes permanent damage.

What Is The Most Important Information I Should Know About Amoxicillin

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to any penicillin antibiotic, such as ampicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, penicillin, or ticarcillin.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

    • kidney disease
    • diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics or
    • food or drug allergies .

It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Amoxicillin can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormonal birth control to prevent pregnancy.

It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this medicine. Ask your doctor about any risk.

Diagnosis For A Urinary Tract Infection

A licensed healthcare professional can diagnose a UTI. You may need to undergo the following tests or procedures in order to receive a positive diagnosis:

    • Urine sample: Your doctor may ask for a urine sample to examine white blood cells, red blood cells, or bacteria.
    • Lab analysis: The doctor determines which bacteria are causing the infection and decides which medication will work the best.
    • Computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scan: Your doctor may ask you to get one of these medical imaging techniques if youre experiencing frequent UTIs.
    • Cystoscopy: A medical procedure where a doctor inserts a tube with a lens to see inside your bladder.

Depending on the results of your tests or procedures, your healthcare provider will help you determine the best treatment option.

Can A Uti Go Away On Its Own

While most patients with a UTI will be prescribed antibiotics, the truth is, uncomplicated urinary tract infections are often self-limiting, meaning they can potentially run their course sans antibiotic treatment, noted a 2018 report in PLoS Medicine.

In fact, that same report found that more than one-half of the women studied experienced a UTI resolution without the use antibiotics. However, since kidney infections occurred in 7 out of 181 women using ibuprofen, the researchers concluded that, at this time, they cannot recommend ibuprofen alone as initial treatment to women with uncomplicated UTIs.

A better idea, for now: Simply wait until a positive urine culture comes back before treating with antibiotics.

How Common Are These Stds In General How Common Are The Antibiotic

Azithromycin chlamydia treatment effectiveness, azithromycin dosage ...

The CDC estimates there are 820,000 cases of gonorrhea in the United States each year. Klausner says that less than 1% fail to respond to the currently recommended treatment. However, he says, resistance to older, less expensive antibiotics is much higher.

Chlamydia is the most common STD in the United States, with nearly 3 million cases occurring annually. So far, no treatment-resistant cases have been reported.

In 2019, nearly 130,000 cases of syphilis were reported in the U.S., with the most infectious types increasing 11% from 2018 to 2019, according to CDC statistics.

The numbers for these three STDs, which are the most common, are at a record high, according to the CDC.

âWeâre absolutely seeing an increase in overall rates of STDs, particularly in younger patients,â says Englund. âHalf of cases are diagnosed in patients aged 15 to 24.â

Can These Stds Still Be Treated

As of 2020, the CDC recommends an injection of ceftriaxone for uncomplicated cases of gonorrhea.

Syphilis can be treated with penicillin, but Klausner says there have been shortages of the antibiotic in the United States and around the world. It can also be treated with azithromycin, though it has shown some resistance to this antibiotic, he says.

Chlamydia still responds to several antibiotics, including doxycyclin, erythromycin, amoxicillin, and azithromycin. Nevertheless, public health officials must be vigilant, says Englund.

âAny time you see resistance rising , you need to look at the others for potential rise and make sure it doesnât start to develop there as well,â she says.

LGV may first produce a temporary genital pimple, blister or ulcer, and then invade the bodys lymphatic system. Rectal infection can mimic inflammatory bowel disease and lead to chronic and severe colon and rectal abnormalities such as fistulas and strictures.

Over the past decade, LGV has become increasingly common in Europe and North America, and has been associated with multiple disease outbreaks, especially among gay and bisexual men. As with chlamydia, LGV can increase the risk of contracting HIV. Using condoms during vaginal or anal sex can reduce the risk of infection, while treating LGV may require a three-week course of antibiotics such as doxycycline.

AUGMENTIN Antibiotic: Dosage, Uses & Side Effects

As stated, amoxicillin is not a recommended therapy for chlamydia infections.

This is because several studies have reported that penicillin-family antibiotics may not effectively eradicate a chlamydia infection, which may then persist after a course of antibiotics is completed .

Azithromycin is still the preferred treatment during pregnancy.

However, the CDC states that amoxicillin is an option for pregnant women since doxycycline is contraindicated during the second and third trimester and quinolone antibiotics may cause cartilage damage in infants.

If amoxicillin is used in a pregnant woman, the dose recommendation is as follows:

    • Amoxicillin 500 mg three times a day for 7 days

Recommendations for the treatment of chlamydia in pregnant women is summarized below in a chart provided by the CDC:

    Rehydrate Yourself With Green Tea

Reducing levels of body hydration can worsen the condition of UTIs. The body needs antioxidants when dehydration aggravates bladder inflammations caused by infections.

Green tea contains catechins such as EGCG these antioxidants prevent cell damage and reduce bladder inflammations to a considerable extent.

Drink a couple of cups of green tea at regular intervals in a day. The body will replenish its levels of antioxidants, and your UTI pain will wither away within a couple of days.

This remedy can momentarily reduce bladder inflammation, which will return once you lower or halt your green tea intake. Sadly, the health benefits of green tea can only treat mild conditions of UTI.

Can Amoxicillin Cure Std Super Infections

So far, weve been talking about the standard, run-of-the-mill case of STDs thats common in millions of people. Unfortunately, there is a new common threat. The World Health Organization recently reported that certain STDs, including gonorrhea, has been growing more resilient to the antibiotics weve been discussing, such as amoxicillin, which are usually used to eradicate it.

One of the likely causes of this advanced super gonorrhea is the fact that people often dont finish their antibiotics. Will Amoxicillin Cure Gonorrhea? Sure, most of the time. But you need to complete your medication, even if your symptoms seem to disappear. Stopping too early can allow bacteria to continue to grow and mutate. This can result in the infection coming back, or becoming far more dangerous.

This new super gonorrhea is much harder to stop. In some severe cases, it is incurable. Most bacteria will eventually evolve, developing resistances against specific antibiotics over time. Unfortunately, that includes amoxicillin. So while amoxicillin can currently usually treat gonorrhea, it will become less effective against strains of super gonorrhea in the future.
