Gp Surgeries And Sexual Health Clinics

How to use chlamydia rapid test kit / STDrapidtestkits.com

Many GP surgeries offer STI testing but not all. The easiest way to find out is to ring up and ask. If you’ve changed GPs since starting at uni to one in your university town, ring up your new GP to find out.

If they do offer STI testing, they’ll book you in for an appointment. If not, they’ll direct you towards the nearest service which does.

This will normally be in the form of a sexual health clinic or GUM clinic, which are just like your local doctors but they specialise in sexual health.

Visiting your doctors or a sexual health clinic is the easiest way to get a free STI test. In some cases, the service might even be on campus, so you won’t have to travel far. Your university may have a page on sexual health resources for students, so that may be a good place to start when finding out about services in your area.

Remember to visit after any time you have unprotected sex. Don’t wait around for your yearly check-up if you have any doubts!

Doing The Sh: 24 Blood Test

These top tips are from people who have completed the test kit in the past.

To help you prepare:

  • Relax and be patient and if youre nervous, ask someone to help you
  • Watch the instruction video and read the instruction leaflet
  • Tie long hair back and take off any scarves or jewellery that could get in your way
  • Lay the test kit items and your two tissues on a clean, flat surface below your waist.

To help blood flow:

  • Take a hot shower or bath, or hold your hand under warm water for a few minutes,
  • Stay standing and keep your arm straight with your hand below your waist
  • Aim for the middle of the tip of your finger, not too close to your fingernail
  • Push lancet down hard against your finger
  • Wipe the first dot of blood away with a clean tissue to stop the blood congealing
  • If your finger dries up, wait a while, warm up your hand, use another finger and make sure you press the lancet down hard against your finger.

Can I Just Buy Treatment Without Testing

We dont advise you to do this.

Risk of unnecessary side effects chlamydia is treated by using antibiotics. Taking antibiotics can have its own drawbacks such as feeling or being sick or diarrhoea. This means that if you do not have chlamydia you are taking medicines which can cause side effects for no benefit at all.

Problem of over-using antibiotics also, taking antibiotics unnecessarily can cause bacteria to become resistant to the medicines. This means that future infections can become more difficult to treat. This doesnt just apply to you, it applies to everyone because bacteria become resistant across the whole of the human species. Its a very serious global health problem.

You could have a different STI it could be that you do have an STI but it isn’t chlamydia. Testing negative for chlamydia could mean you need to consider other STIs, or you can tested for more than 1 STI at once, using a extended STI test kit for example.

You might have a non-STI-related health problem the symptoms of chlamydia can be very similar to other conditions . If you have a test come back negative, you might need further investigations which can only be done by a doctor.

Whats The Difference Between An Sti And An Std

STI stands for sexually transmitted infection and STD stands for sexually transmitted disease. Effectively, the difference is in the name.

A disease occurs when a foreign presence negatively affects and disrupts the bodys normal function. An infection is when a bacteria or virus invades the body and starts to multiply. However, infections dont always cause external symptoms.

Not all sexually transmitted diseases begin with sexually transmitted infections, but many do, and an STI may progress into an STD if left untreated.

Its worth repeating that carriers of STIs can show absolutely no symptoms of infection. This is why its important to get tested after youve had unprotected sex, even if you arent showing any external signs of infection.

    Anatomy Of A Pathogen

For around half a millennium, syphilis has been one of the most widely recognized and feared STIs. It spurred the development of the first drug dubbed a magic bullet and, since the advent of penicillin three decades later, has largely been considered curable. With proper condom use, disease transmission can be reduced to near zero. Left untreated, however, the disease can prove deadly, causing severe neurological issues, especially if transmitted at or before birth.

Detecting the disease, which is caused by the corkscrew-shaped bacterium Treponema pallidum, is easy enough, says Deborah Williamson, a microbiologist at the University of Melbourne in Australia, who has spent several decades studying syphilis. At a clinic, a health-care worker usually takes a blood sample and runs an assay to look for antibodies against the bacterial family that includes T. pallidum. If this assay is positive, the clinician runs further tests on the original sample to zero in on a diagnosis.

What Does The Chlamydia Test Involve

    Chlamydia Test

The recommended tests for chlamydia are simple, painless and generally very reliable.

They involve sending a sample of cells to a laboratory for analysis. You don’t necessarily have to be examined by a doctor or nurse first and can often collect the sample yourself.

There are two main ways the sample can be collected:

    • urinating into a container this should ideally be done at least 1 hour after you last urinated

The results will normally be available in 7 to 10 days. If there’s a high chance you have chlamydia for example, you have symptoms of the infection or your partner has been diagnosed with it and you’ve had unprotected sex with them you might start treatment before you get your results.

    • Being made to do something sexual that you didnt want to do, or being intimidated
    • Feeling that you cant say no to sex

Why Is It Important To Undergo A Chlamydia Test

A chlamydia test is the best way to detect if you have a chlamydia infection or not. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly three million Americans are infected with chlamydia every year.

It is a must to undergo a chlamydia test because the disease can go on without symptoms and someone who has it may unknowingly transfer the infection to other people.

A regular screening is a must for people who are:

  • Sexually active and aged 15 to 24 years old
  • Those who have multiple sex partners
  • Those who have previous chlamydia infections
  • Those people whose sex partner has an active sexually transmitted disease
  • Men who have sex with the same gender
  • Those people who are HIV positive
  • Pregnant women below 25 years old

Your partner may not be able to tell if you have chlamydia, as you may not have any symptoms, but if you have been diagnosed they will need to be tested and may need treatment. Your partner could develop serious symptoms if untreated, or could pass the infection onto someone else.

What Happened When I Took An At

Plus, an ob-gyn weighs in on how the DIY kit compares to a doctors visit.

Its difficult enough to fit in a trip to see the doctor. But when its time for an STD test, many of us really dread it. Were hesitant to get tested in a timely manner , even when we know we should. Its not fun to take the test, and its not fun to talk about. TBH, its terrifying to think of coming out at the end with a positive result.

In fact, according to a survey conducted by at-home testing service myLAB Box, 65% of respondents said that fear was the reason they hadnt gotten tested in several years. And while 70% of people expressed concern about contracting an STD within one month of having sex with a new partner, a third of people waited several months before getting tested.

Thats where myLAB Box comes in. Its goal is to make it possible to take an STD test in the comfort of your own home with a do-it-yourself kit.

Heres how it works: You order a little box filled with everything you needa test swab and tube, a finger prick for the blood sample, and Band-Aids and wipes. After following the simple instructions, you send your results off to their lab and receive your test results in a matter of days.

It took me about 20 minutes in total to test myself for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis . Heres what I did:
