Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Its most commonly spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex. While this infection mostly affects young women, men and women of any age can contract chlamydia.

Testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea requires either a urine test or a straightforward swab test. You will also need to take a blood sample to test for HIV and syphilis. This involves pricking your finger with a special needle called a lancet and collecting blood in a small sample pot. Most people dont find it painful. After collecting your samples, you return it in the pre-paid box to our in-house lab.

You will receive your results within 2-3 days of your sample reaching our lab.

Overcoming Barriers To Testing

A rapid STD test allows you to get your results in minutes rather than days. If the test is positive , you have the opportunity to get immediate treatment rather than having to come back to fill a prescription.

With diseases like HIV, this is important since early treatment translates to a lower risk of illness and a longer lifespan.

The newer tests also aim to overcome another factor that keeps many people away: needles and blood. Depending on the disease, a rapid test may only require a swab of body fluid or a urine sample .

How Much Does The Test Cost

The cost of chlamydia testing varies based on many factors. Chlamydia testing may be paid for by health insurance when ordered by a doctor. Because health plans vary, its important for patients to discuss the cost of testing, including any copays or deductibles, with their health plan.

For patients without health insurance coverage, the cost of testing may include the cost of the office visit and sample collection as well as technician fees. Testing may also be available for free or at low cost through community-based organizations and local health departments.

    Urine Testing Vs Bacterial Culture

Urine testing is currently primarily used to detect bacterial STDs. Chlamydia and gonorrhea urine tests are widely available. Trichomoniasis urine tests are also available, but they are less common.

The gold standard for diagnosing bacterial STDs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, used to be bacterial culture. That involved attempting to grow bacteria out of samples that were taken directly from the cervix or urethra.

These days, bacterial DNA testing is considered a better option. It works differently than bacterial culture. Instead of trying to grow bacteria, these tests just look for bacterial DNA. This can be done using a process called ligase chain reaction or with other DNA amplification techniques.

These types of testing are sensitive to even very small amounts of bacterial DNA. Even better, they do not require a live bacterial sample. As such, they can be run on urine samplesnot just urethral or cervical swabs.

For most people, the thought of a getting gonorrhea urine test or chlamydia urine test is a lot less intimidating than the thought of needing a physical exam.

    Why Take The At

This at-home test can screen for and detect both gonorrhea and chlamydia infections. It can also verify the successful treatment adopted. Both infections rarely show symptoms so, they can be easily disregarded, which will lead to complications. For women, gonorrhea, that is left untreated may spread in the reproductive system such as the uterus, fallopian tubes, as well as the ovaries, leading to pelvic inflammatory disease. Untreated chlamydia, can also lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which could permanently damage the womans reproductive system leading to infertility, as well as deadly ectopic pregnancies.

Men rarely have drastic complications caused by chlamydia however, the consequences of untreated gonorrhea can lead to scarring of the urethra, the development of a penile abscess inside the penis, as well as infertility. Gonorrhea infections could spread in the body, reaching the bloodstream and causing arthritis, heart valve damages, as well as the inflammation of the brain lining and spinal cord.

If you are at risk of contracting any of these two infections, you need to get tested. Risky behaviors include having multiple sex partners, having unprotected sexual relationships, having a partner who has sexually transmitted diseases, having a sex partner who has many sex partners, as well as being young.

Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea Home Testing Guide

We offer two types of test kits, a urine test for men and a swab test kit for women. Urine tests are slightly less accurate in women, which is why women are advised to use the swab test version. Both test kits are easy to use and you will be able to collect your sample within minutes.

The gonorrhea test for men requires, that you collect a sample of your urine, using the test kit provided. The test kit contains a leaflet with instructions as well as two plastic containers, one of which you will use to collect your urine. It is important that you use the label included in the package and affix it to you sample, otherwise the laboratory will not be able to analyse your specimen.

The gonorrhea test kit for women consists of a swab test, used to gather a sample from the vagina. It is as quick as the urine test and requires you to use a cotton swab. You should avoid using vaginal creams or treatments prior to collecting your sample. Gonorrhea can be found in the bodily fluids present in the sexual organs. If you have gonorrhea, the analysis of your urine sample or swab show a positive result.

    What Are Chlamydia And Gonorrhea

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are common sexually transmitted infections caused by a bacterium. Chlamydia is caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis, while Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. While these infections infect both genders, they are more prevalent among women. They are both spread through sexual contact with an infected person, via three routes: vaginal, oral and anal. While chlamydia can affect the reproductive system and the rectum, gonorrhea infects the female reproductive tract, urethra, eyes, throat, vagina and anus.

Both bacteria have symptoms that rarely appear. For Chlamydia, symptoms can be an abnormal vaginal discharge and a burning sensation for women. Gonorrhea shows more symptoms such as watery, creamy and slightly greenish discharge from the vagina, having the urge to urinate and experiencing pain and a burning sensation while urinating, having heavier periods, fever, witnessing sharp pain in the lower abdomen, and feeling pain while having sex.

According to the American Sexual Health Association, in 2015, chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhea were the three most reported sexual infections in the United States. Reports also showed that 65% of chlamydia cases and 50% of gonorrhea cases were among women who are between the ages of 15 and 24 years.

How Soon After Unprotected Sex Can I Test For Chlamydia And Gonorrhoea

iCare Rapid Gonorrhea Test Kit STD Rapid Tests

You should test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea 14 days after you have had unprotected sex, unless you already have symptoms.

This is because chlamydia and gonorrhoea have an incubation period, meaning they may not show up on a test if you take it too early. To get the most accurate results you need to wait for 2 weeks after exposure to get tested.

There is a small chance that the infection may not show up on a test, and give you a negative result. Therefore, if you receive a negative test, you should repeat the test 6 weeks later to confirm your results.
