What Happens If A Man Doesnt Treat His Chlamydia

What Is Chlamydia Symptoms and Treatment

If chlamydia is left untreated, it can become a more severe infection. Its also possible for it to have long term effects, including on fertility.

Chlamydia can affect the whole of the male reproductive system, causing inflammation in the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles, as well as the testicles themselves and the prostate gland. If this inflammation isnt treated, it may lead to scarring, which can have an effect on fertility.

There have also been some studies that suggest the infection itself can affect sperm being produced properly, but the evidence around this isnt conclusive at the moment.

Chlamydia can also cause a condition called reactive arthritis. This is when there is inflammation that affects the eyes, joints, and the urethra . The knees, feet, toes, hips, and ankles are also commonly affected. Its unclear exactly why this happens, but it may be related to the body overreacting to the infection. The symptoms can take months to recover, and you should treat this with anti-inflammatory medicines.

Treating chlamydia is also very important because it can easily be passed on to other partners, even if you dont have symptoms.

When Should I See My Healthcare Provider

When it comes to chlamydia, its a good idea to be proactive. Speak with your healthcare provider about your risks of infection. Make a plan to get screened regularly for STIs based on your providers recommendations for how often you should be tested. Make an appointment with your healthcare provider if your partner tests positive for chlamydia or if you notice any signs or symptoms that you may be infected.

What Causes Genital Warts

Certain types of HPV cause this STD. Genital warts spread through skin-to-skin contact during sex. A different virus causes warts on your hands and feet. You cant get genital warts by touching yourself or someone else with a hand or foot that has warts.

Genital warts spread through:

  • Genital touching .
  • Giving oral sex to someone who has HPV or genital warts.
  • Receiving oral sex from someone who has HPV or who has genital warts on the mouth, lips or tongue.

When To See Your Doctor

Penile discharge is usually the result of an STD, but there are other possible causes too. You should see your doctor any time that you notice discharge to rule out STDs or to identify the cause quickly.

Most causes of penile discharge can be successfully treated, but ignoring the symptom can result in serious complications. You also want to identify if an STD is to blame, so you do not transmit the disease to others.

Its important to recognise that sometimes it may take several weeks for symptoms to resolve completely.

We often see patients who continue to have urethral discharge despite negative tests for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, or their successful treatment after test results are positive. Further tests can lead to a diagnosis of other STIs like Mycoplasma genitalium or Trichomonas vaginalis.

If all STI causes have been ruled out, we will need to consider possible risks of re-infection and possible refer to a urologist.

Why Is Azithromycin Not A Chlamydia Treatment Anymore

The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV recently released guidelines explaining that Azithromycin is no longer an effective treatment for chlamydia. This is because of increasing levels of bacterial resistance to azithromycin. Instead, the recommended first-line treatment is now only doxycycline.

How Is Chlamydia Diagnosed

The most common test for chlamydia is called a nucleic acid amplification test . Your provider takes a sample of fluid by doing a vaginal/cervical swab or collecting a urine sample. Then, they send the sample off to a lab to check for the bacteria that causes chlamydia. Your provider may do the test in an office, or they may ask you to do an at-home chlamydia test. Follow your providers instructions carefully to ensure you get accurate test results.

Because most chlamydia cases are asymptomatic, its important to get screened for chlamydia even if you dont notice any signs of infection. The CDC recommends that sexually active cisgender women who are high-risk for chlamydia get screened regularly. Women, more so than men, experience the most severe complications from chlamydia. Transgender men and nonbinary individuals with vaginas should be screened regularly, too, as they can experience the same complications of chlamydia.

Youre considered high-risk if you:

  • Have had chlamydia infections previously.

Cisgender men, or trans and nonbinary individuals with penises, should be screened for chlamydia if:

  • They live in a setting where chlamydia spreads frequently, like correctional facilities, adolescent clinics and sexual health clinics.
  • They have sex with other men.

How Do You Diagnose Penile Discharge

Penile discharge can be suggestive of an underlying infection. Trying to determine the cause of this requires a thorough assessment which will look at your medical, surgical, social and sexual history.

A physical examination of genitalia is very helpful, and in many cases allows the clinicians to make a presumptive diagnosis, and enables them to request extra tests where necessary and will allow the clinicians to prescribe the appropriate antibiotics before the final results are available.

Many men find it daunting to have their genitalia examined by a clinician. You can rest assured that our clinicians will examine you with utmost respect, dignity, and professionalism. You will also have the presence of a chaperone to support you if you prefer.

The following tests are undertaken to establish the cause of your penile discharge.

  • Urine Culture & Sensitivity Test

Treatment For Penile Discharge

Sexual Health – Chlamydia (Male)

The treatment for penile discharge will depend on the cause.

UTIs will be cleared up with antibiotics, and once the infection is cleared, you should no longer see discharge. It is important to complete all courses of medications for UTIs, even after symptoms have disappeared. This is necessary to ensure the infection is really gone.

Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. In many cases, this condition can get better on its own, but medications help to speed recovery and relieve symptoms. Alpha-blockers are also common to help relax the bladder muscle.

Smegma can be treated with good hygiene. Gently washing the area keeps the area clean and free of any fluid buildup.

Balanitis is treated according to the cause and can include antibiotics, antifungal medications, and steroid creams to relieve inflammation and swelling.

What Can Happen If Chlamydia Isnt Treated

Untreated chlamydia can put your health at risk. Make an appointment with your provider immediately if you notice any symptoms of chlamydia, and get regular STI screenings to avoid complications later.

Complications of chlamydia for people with vaginas

Untreated chlamydia can cause:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease . PID is a serious condition that requires hospitalization. It can occur when an untreated STI, like chlamydia, damages your reproductive organs. PID can lead to infertility and chronic pelvic pain. It can also cause an ectopic pregnancy, which is life-threatening for the fetus and potentially deadly for the mother or gestational parent, too.
  • Pregnancy complications. An untreated infection can lead to pre-term delivery. Also, if youre pregnant and have chlamydia, you can pass the infection on to your newborn. Babies born with chlamydia may have pneumonia or conjunctivitis that could lead to blindness if not treated.

Complications of chlamydia for people with penises

Untreated chlamydia can cause:

  • Epididymitis. Infection can spread to the testicles and the tube that carries sperm to your testicles , causing symptoms like pain, swelling and tenderness in your testicles.
  • Reduced fertility. Chlamydia can harm your sperm, negatively impacting your ability to conceive.

Complications of chlamydia that can affect all genders

Can I Still Be Tested Even If I Dont Have Symptoms

Current guidelines both in Australia and internationally recommend testing people with symptoms, or sexual contacts of known cases. They dont recommend doctors screen people without symptoms.

When you screen, you have to be confident you have access to highly effective treatments, the treatments do not cause more harm than the condition itself and you have a good understanding of how often the condition progresses to cause complications.

For MG that balance is against screening currently. Thats because there are often no symptoms and we dont yet fully understand how often the infection progresses to cause harm, although it seems to do so less often than chlamydia. The microorganism has also rapidly become so resistant to antibiotics we are having to use stronger and stronger ones, and multiple courses, to cure. This contrasts to chlamydia, which is easy to cure.

Not only do many antibiotics have side-effects, they affect the bacteria in peoples gut. These bacteria are important to keep us healthy, and if we bombard them with antibiotics it can affect our health and also lead to antibiotic resistance in a whole range of other bacteria, not just MG.

Do I Need To See A Doctor

The answer is nearly always, yes. Whilst the irritation may not seem serious enough to warrant a visit to the GP, it is important to get checked. Many of these symptoms are common across a variety of conditions, and so its important to get a proper diagnosis. Its also likely that conditions left untreated get worse the longer you wait, the harder treatment can be. You also want to ensure you do not pass on any infections to sexual partners.

Its impossible to self-diagnose in these circumstances, given the range of causes. Plus, there may be a systemic cause, underlying infection, or STI, which must be treated in order to avoid complications. Sooner is always better when it comes to treatment, so please do not hesitate to make yourself an appointment, and do ask to see a male doctor if you feel more comfortable.

How Long Until I Can Have Sex Again

If sexually transmitted, then we recommend you wait until after you and your partner have completed treatment before resuming sexual intercourse. This will ensure the infection has completely cleared, and that you will not reinfect each other.

If non-sexually transmitted, we recommend waiting until you have finished treatment, and symptoms have resolved before having sex again. This will help to reduce any unnecessary pain, prevent worsening the infection, or delaying the healing process.

How Are Genital Warts Managed Or Treated

Diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of chlamydia | Infectious diseases | NCLEX-RN | Khan Academy

Genital warts can go away on their own. Or they may get larger or multiply. There are different ways to remove genital warts. You may need several treatments to get rid of warts. For most of them, youll receive an anesthetic first to numb the treatment area. During treatment, you should abstain from sexual contact.

Your healthcare provider may use one of these methods to treat genital warts:

  • Electrocautery: An electric current burns away warts.
  • Freezing: During cryotherapy, your provider applies liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy warts.
  • Laser treatment: A laser light destroys tiny blood vessels inside warts, cutting off their blood supply.
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure : With LEEP, your provider uses an electrically charged wire loop to remove warts. A provider may use this method to remove warts on a womans cervix.
  • Topical medicine: Once a week for several weeks, you apply a prescription chemical solution to the warts. The chemical causes blisters to form under the warts, stopping blood flow. In some cases, your provider may apply the solution.
  • Your provider applies the topical TCA solution in the office. Your provider may also provide a prescription for a topical medical when appropriate eg. Imiquimod that patient self-administers at home for some weeks as directed.
  • Surgery: Your provider may surgically cut out warts that are large or dont respond to other treatments.

How Is Penile Discharge Treated

In our experience, the most common cause of penile discharge is STIs. Therefore the treatment in the form of antibiotics is selected on the basis of STI test results.

Please see the following treatment pages for how we treat the following STIs:

Recommendations on the choice as well as the dose of antibiotics is an area of specialised practice, and guided by current sensitivity patterns of various infections. For example, gonorrhoea is well known to develop resistance against the recommended antibiotics.

Presence of pain in testicles, genitalia or perineum in the patients with penile discharge indicates possible local spread of the infection, and thus longer courses of antibiotics are prescribed in such cases.

Those with discharge as a result of Non-specific urethritis are treated with the same course of antibiotics which treat discharge related to Chlamydia infection.

This is why it is essential to first collect the urine specimen and identify the cause before administering antibiotics. However, there may be times where you clinician recommends that you initiate treatment before your results come back .

If the cause of penile discharge is not an STI, we can also offer oral antibiotics/antifungals to treat the discharge.
