How To Know If You Have Chlamydia

Chlamydia is incredibly difficult to diagnose due to its symptomless nature for 70% of women and 50% of men. The only certain way to know that you have chlamydia is to get tested. If you do have symptoms then you will still need to be tested to effectively diagnose that the symptoms are caused by chlamydia. If youre sexually active, you should get tested regularly whether you have symptoms or not.

Std Test Result Comes Negative But Still Worried What If It Is A False Negative How To Be Sure

Are you worried about having an STD even after being tested negative? Are you scares that the test results are False negative*? There are many reasons for a test result to appear False negative. Common reasons include the testing for the STD too soon, that is during its incubation period. A second most common reason is urinating too soon before a test, that means it is best if you do not urinate 2 hours before the test.

A false negative test is when the test comes negative, but in reality, you already have the disease inside your body.}

Although any STD tests can be false negative there are predominantly two such diseases where there is a greater chance of having a false negative reason.

Testing Before The Recommended Incubation Period

One reason that false negatives occur is due to testing prior to the recommended window period for testing. No STD test is accurate immediately after sex as it takes time for the bacteria or virus to reach a detectable state or for the body to present an immune response.

The length of time that you are required to wait depends on the particular test that you take and can be anywhere from 7 28 days after exposure. You will see this on the STD tests on Your Sexual Health, displayed as the Accuracy From period.

Each test carries an Accuracy From date which is the time period when the results reach the required level of accuracy. You should always test after this date to avoid false negative results.

Home Std Tests Are Convenient But There Are Drawbacks

Faint Positive Pregnancy Test: Are You Pregnant?

Seeing a health care provider usually is the most reliable way to determine if you have a sexually transmitted disease . In some cases, home testing for STDs provides a convenient or necessary alternative, but it may come with some drawbacks.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that of the nearly 20 million estimated new STD infections each year, about half of them are among young people age 15 to 24. The most recent CDC surveys show large surges from 2014 to 2018 in cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia, primary and secondary syphilis, and congenital syphilis.

Some STDs do not cause symptoms or the symptoms are barely noticeable so many infected people dont know they need treatment. If left untreated, though, STDs can lead to severe health complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, increased risk for HIV, certain cancers, and infertility.

Because the number of infections and need for screening have increased, at-home test kits for STDs such as HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea have grown in popularity. Visiting a clinic is the best choice for screening, but if privacy concerns, inconvenience, or limited access to a provider are issues, then online and home-to-lab STD screening tests may be a good option.

Why Take The Chlamydia And Gonorrhea Test

The Chlamydia and Gonorrhea tests are the best methods to screen and effectively diagnose an active infection. They also help monitor the effectiveness of a treatment path. If positively diagnosed, you are expected to repeat the test three months after completing the treatment. Most doctors opt for a combined test in order to have the right diagnosis and elimination tool.

For both sexually transmitted diseases, people who are at high risk of contracting any of these infections need to get tested routinely. Risk factors include being sexually active and under the age of 25 years, having numerous sex partners, not regularly using condoms, having a previous chlamydia or gonorrhea infection, being a drug addict, having a sex partner who have STD, as well as being HIV positive. Men who have sex with men are also at high risk of becoming infected. Having an early diagnosis can help prevent any complications arising from these infections.

Complications caused by untreated chlamydia or gonorrhea include:

Other complications witnessed by infected men are lymphadenitis, balanitis, urethral stricture, or fistula. To prevent these complications from arising and affecting the quality of your life, you have to be tested routinely and address the problem, effectively.

What If My Std Test Is Negative

Reasons for a False Positive or False Negative COVID-19 Test Result

If you get a negative test result, it means that the tests did not find an STI. Each STI has a window period. This is the time between when a person comes in contact with an STI, and when the STI will show up on a test. If the test is taken too soon after contact there is a chance that a test result is not accurate.

What Do The Results Mean

If your screening results were negative or normal, it means no syphilis infection was found. Since antibodies can take a couple of weeks to develop in response to a bacterial infection, you may need another screening test if you think you were exposed to the infection. Ask your health care provider about when or if you need to be re-tested.

If your screening tests show a positive result, you will have more testing to rule out or confirm a syphilis diagnosis. If these tests confirm you have syphilis, you will probably be treated with penicillin, a type of antibiotic. Most early-stage syphilis infections are completely cured after antibiotic treatment. Later-stage syphilis is also treated with antibiotics. Antibiotic treatment for later-stage infections can stop the disease from getting worse, but it can’t undo damage already done.

If you have questions about your results, or about syphilis, talk to your health care provider.

The Incubation Period Has A Role To Play

Every STIs has an incubation period chlamydia is noexception. This period is a span of time from the moment you are exposed to theinfection to the moment the antibodies start to form.

Chlamydia tests search for these antibodies, and ifyou dont wait for the incubation to end, there wont be enough antibodies thatwill show up on tests. This will, in turn, result in a false-negative chlamydiatest.

But, even if you do wait for the incubation to end,you still might not experience symptoms or signs of chlamydia. This is anextremely common problem with STIs, which is why most of them remain undetectedfor a long time.

To be 100% sure, you are chlamydia-free, you shouldget tested, there is no other way to know if you do carry the infection or not.If you do test positive, you need to repeat the same test 2 weeks after yourtreatment has ended.

I was diagnosed positive for Chlamydia in November of ’14 due to a cheating boyfriend. I took 2 500 mg of Azithromycin December 8 and was retested the 27. The second came out negative. January 13 I had a Pap smear was was tested positive AGAIN with Chlamydia. I did not had sex since a week before my treatment back in December. Again, I took 2 500mg of Azithromycin. Two weeks later I was tested once more and it showed negative. Thank gosh right? Well, March 4 I went in for testing, a birth control renewal, and for a transvag ultrasound . This test was positive! What the heck?! How are these staying positive if I have completely sustained from sexual contact?

What Is A False Positive Test Result

A false positive outcome indicates that you have a certain condition or disease when in actuality you do not have the disease or condition. Melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is a good example of an illness that can produce false positive results.

In terms of tests for STIs, a false positive result for chlamydia or gonorrhoea for instance would indicate that you have the infection, when the reality is that you dont. This can lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety for people as well as receiving treatment for no reason. In the case of gonorrhoea or chlamydia, this would involve taking antibiotics , which are unnecessary, could lead to unpleasant side effects and a waste of time for patients, doctors, nurses and pharmacists. It is also a waste of health resources and money for the patient, if theyve paid for their prescription.

If you test before that 14 days is over, you may test negative, but you could still pass the bacteria on following your test.

What Happens During A Syphilis Test

A syphilis test is usually in the form of a blood test. During a syphilis blood test, a health care professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm, using a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial. You may feel a little sting when the needle goes in or out. This usually takes less than five minutes.

More advanced stages of syphilis can affect the brain and spinal cord. If your symptoms show your disease might be in a more advanced stage, your health care provider may order a syphilis test on your cerebrospinal fluid . CSF is a clear liquid found in your brain and spinal cord.

For this test, your CSF will be collected through a procedure called a lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap. During the procedure:

How To Deal With A Potentially False Negative

If you take an STD test and get negative test results, the best thing is to get another test after some time.

Dont get a repeat test immediately in case its still during the window period.

Wait for a few weeks around 3-6 weeks.

Make sure the repeat test is done at a lab. Either go to a lab or clinic yourself or order an online STD lab test from STDCheck.

During the waiting period, do not have sex with anyone just in case it was a false negative, and you really have an STD.

If the second test is positive, remember to inform your sexual partner.
