Parents Have A Role In Chlamydia Prevention

Over the Counter Medicines – What You Need To Know

Parents can do two main things to help their kids avoid getting chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections , says Dombrowski. These two things are:

  • Talk openly. Parents can start by talking with their kids about sex and sexual health early, giving the kids accurate information she says. When having these conversations, dont try to frighten children into practicing abstinence or safe sex. Its pretty common for parents to use STIs to talk about what can happen if you have sex or unprotected sex. But using STIs as a scare tactic is not effective, she says. It just makes the kids feel more frightened, more stigmatized, and terrible if they really do get one.
  • Ensure access to condoms. Parents are often focused on preventing pregnancy, says Dombrowski, which can be achieved with various contraceptives besides condoms. Parents should also think about kids having access to condoms for the prevention of chlamydia and other STIs, she says. Parents can leave condoms lying around where kids will find them, without saying much of anything about the condoms, she suggests.

Indications help doctors determine which antibiotic to prescribe. There are over 100 types of antibiotics, each with different indications for treatment. Some common antibiotics prescribed include:

    • Ceftriaxone
    • Clindamycin

Chlamydia Drug Made Available Without Prescription

Are OTC (over the counter) medicines SAFE to give to your child? | Dr. Kristine Kiat

    06 August, 2008By Steve Ford

An oral antibiotic is to be made available for treating chlamydia without prescription for the first time.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency last week approved proposals to make the generic drug azithromycin available over-the-counter in pharmacists. The ruling applies to only one brand of the drug, made by Actavis UK and who will market it under the name Clamelle.

The oral antibiotic will be available to people 16 years and over if they have tested positive for chlamydia infection and have no symptoms, and for their sexual partners. Actavis is working with the National Pharmacy Association on training materials for pharmacists and a Clamelle-branded chlamydia testing kit.

Dr June Raine, MHRA director of vigilance and risk management of medicines, said, Up to 70% of people who have chlamydia have no symptoms and could therefore remain undiagnosed. This means that they are at huge risk of serious long-term health complications, including infertility and ectopic pregnancy.

Todays move means that symptomfree people diagnosed with Chlamydia and their partner will be able to get convenient effective treatment from their local pharmacy, she said.

Natika Halil, director of information at the Family Planning Association, said: For people who are already testing themselves at home it is a really positive step forward that the treatment can now also be bought from pharmacies.

    How Does Doxycycline Treat Chlamydia

Antibiotics work against bacteria. For their own survival and reproduction bacteria need to produce certain proteins. Doxycycline works by entering the bacteria cells and blocking the production of these proteins.

If taken correctly, doxycycline helps to completely get rid of a bacterial infection like chlamydia in 95% of the cases. To make sure that doxycycline will work properly, its important that you complete the treatment by taking every single dose on time.

Doxycycline helps you to fight the bacteria that are causing an infection in your body, but it does not prevent you from catching infections like chlamydia again. During your chlamydia treatment youre advised to avoid vaginal, oral, and anal sex, even with a condom. The same is true for your partner. This will ensure you dont pass the infection to other people or catch it again while you are recovering.

If you do decide to have sex anyway, use a condom to make sure you avoid spreading your infection.

If you are under 25 you should take a chlamydia test 3 months after finishing your treatment.

First Antibiotic To Be Made Available Over The Counter

An antibiotic tablet will be made available over the counter from chemists without the need for a prescription for the first time.

The drug, that will be on sale by the end of the year, will be handed out to people who have tested positive for Chlamydia which can cause infertility if left untreated.

It is thought one in 10 young people have the disease, which can have no symptoms at all.

For the first time it will be possible to be tested and treated for a sexually transmitted disease without having to see a doctor.

It is hoped more people will be diagnosed and treated because of the convenience of visiting a pharmacist instead of a GP or hospital sexual health clinic and it is hoped more medicines for a wide variety of conditions will follow.

The move will not change guidance from the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence which recommends that antibiotics not be prescribed for cough, colds, and sore throats, experts said.

Antibiotics are effective against Chlamydia and patients must be treated quickly in order to avoid further spread, they said.

Patients will be able to buy an approved standard testing kit, called Clamelle costing £25, post a urine sample to an approved laboratory where the test will be carried out and receive the results back in the post with information and advice.

If the test is positive, the patient goes to any pharmacy, not necessarily the same one where the test was bought, and the results are confirmed via computer.
