What Is The Typical Dosage Of A Z

Z-Pack comes in a convenient blister pack for easy dosing. Always follow your doctors instructions, but typical dosing is an initial dose of 500 mg , then 250 mg per day for 4 days.

Z-Pack can be taken with or without food. Compared to other macrolides, it is given once a day because it has a longer half-life and it is removed from your blood slowly. Many infections only require a once-a-day 5-day regimen.

What Are The Benefits Of Z

Z-Pack is a convenient way to take antibiotics since it comes in an easy-to-understand blister pack. Z-Pack should not be used to treat viral infections.

Some of the bacterial infections that Z-pack may treat include:

  • Cat-scratch disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Myasthenia gravis

Breastfeeding or pregnant women should avoid using Zithromax to eliminate the risk of passing the chemicals to their children. Keep in mind that these are not all-inclusive lists.

Note that while Azithromycin is a great antibiotic for some bacterial infections, it is not first line for other bacterial infections, and is therefore not always the best antibiotic to use in all circumstances. Your doctor will evaluate your situation and decide if Azithromycin makes sense for you based on your disease, past and present medical conditions, and allergy profile.

  • Treating seasonal allergies with antihistamines or nasal sprays.

  • Treating nasal polyps. These can cause blockages that can lead to sinus infections. Polyps can be treated with corticosteroid nasal sprays like Flonase. Sometimes they need to be surgically removed if they arent getting better with nasal sprays.

  • Cutting back or quitting smoking. Avoiding cigarette smoke can help prevent sinus infections.

Doxycycline: New Treatment Of Choice For Genital Chlamydia Infections

Z Pack For Chlamydia

In the 1998 Canadian Sexually Transmitted Disease Guidelines, azithromycin replaced doxycycline as treatment of choice for chlamydia infection. Azithromycin was also listed before doxycycline for non-gonococcal urethritis , muco-purulent cervicitis and as co-treatment with cefixime for uncomplicated gonorrhea. Sexual contacts are traditionally treated with the same medication as index cases. In the 1998 and 2002 US guidelines, however, azithromycin and doxycycline were equivalent first-line treatments for these conditions . From 1998, azithromycin was provided free of charge from BCCDC for the treatment of laboratory-confirmed cases of genital chlamydia infections and their contacts.

Important research findings dictate a return to doxycycline as the treatment of choice for uncomplicated urethral, cervical, and oral chlamydia infections, for NGU and MPC, and as co-treatment for uncomplicated gonorrhea.

Efficacy

In research studies, doxycycline and azithromycin have been shown to be equivalent for the treatment of genital chlamydia infection. A meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials showed equal efficacy with no difference in adverse events.

Effectiveness

Antimicrobial resistance

Cost

A course of azithromycin costs the British Columbia health care system $18.15, whereas a course of doxycycline is $4.06. Cost should not be a factor when the more expensive medication is more effective but, in this case, the cheaper medication is equal or superior.

Pharmacist Tips For Azithromycin

You can take azithromycin with or without food. Stomach upset and diarrhea are possible side effects, so if it happens to you, taking azithromycin with food can help lessen it.

If you’re using the liquid form of azithromycin , shake the bottle well before using. Be sure to use a medication dose cup, spoon, or syringe to measure out your dose. Using household teaspoons might cause you to take the wrong amount of azithromycin .

Do not take antacids containing aluminum within 2 hours of this medication. These antacids affect how well your body absorbs azithromycin .

You can store the liquid version of azithromycin at room temperature or in the fridge. Putting it in the fridge can help make it taste better. The liquid is good for up to 10 days after it has been mixed by your pharmacist.

If you have diarrhea after taking azithromycin , try taking probiotic supplements to help lessen this side effect. Separate the probiotic from azithromycin by at least 1 hour to prevent azithromycin from killing the “good” bacteria from the probiotic. Be sure to continue the supplement for a few days after your last dose of azithromycin .

Finish all of the azithromycin your healthcare provider prescribed for you, even if you start to feel better. Stopping azithromycin too soon can cause your infection to come back.

The recommended dosage of azithromycin for chlamydia is 1 gram as a single dose. This dose may be taken morning or night and can be taken with or without food. Another name for azithromycin is Zithromax.

If you have taken your dose of azithromycin on an empty stomach and your stomach has become a bit upset or you feel sick, it is Ok to eat some food, which may help to settle it.

A 500mg dose of azithromycin is not recommended by guidelines to cure chlamydia. There is also a chance it may increase the risk of C. trachomatis bacteria becoming resistant to it. You should never share your dose of azithromycin with another person.

Is Treatment Always Necessary For Chlamydia

5 Reasons You Should Work Out Every Day, And How To Lose Weight The Easiest Way!

Yes, treatment is necessary for chlamydia, particularly in women of childbearing age, because it reduces the risk of chlamydia-associated ectopic pregnancy, fertility problems, and the transmission of chlamydia to neonates during birth. In women, of all ages, chlamydia treatment reduces the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease.

In men, treatment for chlamydia stops them from infecting or reinfecting sexual partners with the bacteria.

Treat any person testing positive for chlamydia with a recommended course of antibiotics promptly. Delays in treatment have been associated with complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease.

Zithromax Effectiveness In Clinical Trials

In clinical trials, Zithromax was effective at fighting bacterial infection, including some antibiotic-resistant strains.

Studies conducted before approval of the drug measured its minimum inhibitory concentration in relation to a host of bacteria. MIC is the lowest concentration of an antibiotic that will inhibit the growth of bacteria and thereby kill them. A lower MIC means a more effective antibiotic.

In a 1991 study in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, researchers found Zithromax had a markedly low MIC against some bacteria compared with three other types of antibiotics, meaning it was highly effective for example, resolving 92 percent of gonorrhea infections treated.

When To See A Doctor

If you have been sick with what seems like a cold or the flu without improvement for 5-7 days, check in with your doctor.

This could be a sign that you have pneumonia or have developed a secondary infection.

If you have a compromised immune system, are over age 65, or have other medical problems, call your doctor sooner.

Children who have symptoms of pneumonia should be seen by their pediatrician right away, since they may not display common signs of pneumonia, even if they are very ill.

Why Do I Keep Getting A Chlamydia Infection

You can get chlamydia even after treatment. You may get it again for several reasons, including:

  • You did not complete your course of antibiotics as directed and the initial chlamydia did not go away.
  • Your sexual partner has untreated chlamydia and gave it to you during sexual activity.
  • You used an object during sex that was not properly cleaned and was contaminated with chlamydia.

Chlamydia is easy to cure. If you test positive for chlamydia, basically you take an antibiotic, says Jill Rabin, MD, cochief in the division of ambulatory care for womens health programs and prenatal care assistance program services for Northwell Health in New Hyde Park, New York.

Your partner must take an antibiotic, too, to keep them from reinfecting you, she says.

You have to have your partner treated, and if you have more than one partner, they should all be treated, says Dr. Rabin, regardless of your partners genders.

Even if you dont have chlamydia now, its wise to learn how to protect yourself so you wont develop this common infection in the first place. In women, chlamydia can create serious health problems, including infertility. Besides, no one ever wants to have a sexually transmitted disease and then have to tell other people about it.
